These are some of the things we are trying to achieve on our page. We believe that therapy for children should be fun and more accessible. We believe in empowering parents with knowledge and awareness and we are mindful of creating activities that only uses resources already available in your own home. ☺️

Perfect wet weather indoor activity💧🌧
Age 6 months- 1 years old

Works on
💓Sitting
💓Upper body strength
💓Eye hand coordination
💓Sensory with the rustling of the plastic bags
💓Kneeling
💓Grasping

You need
Socks or plastic bags or a mixture

A laundry basket, the higher the better to work on kneeling if they are at that age but a horizontal one for younger ones is fine too!

What to do
Loop some socks and plastic bags around the holes of the laundry basket and simply get them to pull them out! Remembering to hold onto the basket for them if it’s quite high so it doesn’t fall on them when they are tugging at the socks/bags☺️

To grade it for the 6 months old, simply push the socks and plastic bags into the holes without doing the loop, this will make it easier for them to pull the materials out ☺️

ADHD
Many people have the misconception that a child with ADHD have obvious visible behavioural traits like they can’t sit still, they have a lot of energy and just can’t focus. Although there is some truth to this, these behaviours are only the tip of the ice berg.

In this post, I address all the other underlying issues a child with ADHD may have that aren’t that noticeable and many don’t receive the help they need even though they are struggling. They are often labelled as just being disorganised or forgetful.

If you suspect that your child may have ADHD, always talk to your local GP or a paediatrician first, they may then refer you to us to get support and strategies. ☺️

Soccer Player ⚽️

Did you know there are a few motor skills they need to master before your little one can kick a ball around? One key one is to have good balance. I’ve broken down the steps for you, starting off with the easiest balance activity and working towards harder balancing work.☺️

Steps to good balance

1 lift one foot off the ground onto an elevated still object
2 balance one foot on a moving object
3 toe tap onto multiple still objects
4 balance on one foot with no assistance
5 lean forward on one foot like a plane
6 lift soft toys or bean bags with one foot from side to side multiple times
7 roll a soccer ball back and forth with one foot

Try this with your little one today ⚽️

Easy Set Up Brain Gym Game 🧠

Perfect Brain Gym excersize that works on bi lateral coordination

You need
Paper and felt tips or coloured paper
Scissors

Set Up
Cut out shapes. 2x circles, 2x ovals, 2x squares, 2x thin ovals. Using different colours for each shape if you are using coloured paper or simply colour them in with felt tips.

What to do
Each shape has a movement,
Circles: fist
Squares: flat hands
Ovals: flat verticals hands (like a chop movement)
Thin ovals: sideway fist
(Exampled in the video).

Line the shapes vertically in front of the child then get them to do the movements with their hands, exampled in the video. You can swap the shapes around to make a complete new sequence. Perfect movement break activity or just a general brain gym excersize. 😊

You can grade it by simply having two sets of sequence or have the same shape on some of the rows.

Tummy Time

I have had a few questions regarding tummy time so thought I would do a little post on it. We probably know tummy time is important but to get our little one engaged in tummy time can be a bit challenging. Here are some tips to encourage your baby to engage in longer periods of tummy time and actually having FUN with you while doing it!

The idea is to not force it, let them do the movement naturally!

A question that comes up often, what do we actually do? It’s hard to understand what we do when people explains it with using medical jargons and big terminology that nobody understands. In this post, I try to explain how we can help your child with using everyday language. 😊

If you know of any child who is struggling in these areas, come check us out at www.ot4kids.co.nz

If you have any questions about a child’s learning development, please feel free to contact us. I promise you, we are not scary and am happy to answer any questions 😊
