Our amazing team and residents at Eversley Care Centre in Hastings have just won the EBOS Overall Excellence in Care Award at the 2025 New Zealand Aged Care Association Excellence in Care Awards!
This incredible recognition came after Eversley took out the Sustainability category for their beautiful Aroha Adventures initiative - a project that’s all about heart, creativity, and community spirit.
With so many soft toys ending up in landfill, our residents saw an opportunity to give them a second life through hangarua — recycling with purpose. They search local op shops for pre-loved toys, lovingly wash and mend them, and then bring them back to life. But that’s just the beginning…
Each toy gets its own backstory, a passport, a recycled suitcase, and an adoption certificate - ready to head off on a new adventure with someone in the community who could use a little lift.
It’s a simple idea that’s sparked connection and joy for our residents and for those who receive these special companions.
We couldn’t be prouder of the Eversley whānau. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Move over WOW - there is a new Wearable Arts Show taking centre stage. Residents at Woodland Village in Motueka partnered up with staff members to create some incredible costumes made from recycled materials.
Teams were given up to eight weeks to design and tailor their costume before strutting their stuff on the catwalk of the Woodland fashion show.
Members of the community, family and village were invited to watch the show, followed by an afternoon tea and live entertainment.
These amazing creations are now proudly on display in our Whanau room. Congratulations to all the teams involved! Check out more of the costumes in The Guardian Motueka & Golden Bay full-page spread.

We love seeing generations connect - and we were absolutely chuffed when children’s author David Riley (Reading Warrior) shared his idea for an intergenerational storytelling project with us.
The project paired Year 7 and 8 students from The Gardens School with Elmwood residents - their ‘elder buddies’. Over six months, the pairs met weekly to share memories, stories, and laughter. The students then transformed these precious moments into short stories and artwork, which were published in a beautiful book titled Silent Witness.
The book’s launch was recently celebrated at a special event at Elmwood, where students and residents read excerpts and reflected on what the experience meant to them.
Our residents cherished the weekly visits, and the students are now published authors! What a testament to the power of storytelling, connection, and learning across generations!

Every story deserves to be heard -
This International Day of Older Persons, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible lives of our residents through Oceania’s Legacy Voices Project.
When one of our staff members found a childhood interview of her grandmother talking about life during WWII, a beautiful idea was sparked - to capture and celebrate the incredible stories of our residents.
We’ve teamed up with University of Canterbury student Torrin Clark, who’s been sitting down with residents at The Oaks and Addington Gardens to record their stories. These one-on-one interviews have uncovered powerful reflections on life, shaped by decades of experience, resilience, and adventure.
“Every resident I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with has lived a wildly different story. These stories are more than just memories – each one offers a unique lens through which to view the world.”
— Torin Clark, University of Canterbury
The Legacy Voices Project reflects our commitment to ensuring our residents voices are heard, valued, and celebrated. The stories collected bring to life how much we can learn from those who have gone before us, we just need to make the effort to listen.
We look forward to sharing these inspiring stories with you.

Welcome to spring everyone! We are taking our hats off to our Woodlands residents who have stolen the Out & About spotlight in last week’s Motueka Golden Bay Guardian with their colourful Daffodil Day creations!
Residents spent the past two weeks designing and crafting bright, joyful hats - a creative way to show their support for a cause that touches so many.
They were beyond delighted to see their handiwork featured in the Guardian's Out & About section.
A big thank you to The Guardian Motueka & Golden Bay for capturing the day - and to our residents for reminding us of the power of creativity, community and celebration.

This week at Meadowbank Village, residents took part in a hands-on session with Terrena Griffiths from the Chip Packet Project New Zealand – transforming used foil wrappers into thermal survival blankets for people doing it tough.

Together, they created two complete blankets from chip packets they'd been collecting, flattening, and cleaning as part of a wider Oceania initiative.

This project is about more than recycling – it’s about giving new life to waste, connecting generations, and creating hope, purpose, and community.

With more visits planned between now and the end of the year, and hundreds of residents already rolling up their sleeves, we’re proud to be turning small acts into lasting impact.

A big thank you to Terrena and our residents for their enthusiasm, creativity, and heart.

Kath Des Forges QSM is no stranger to colour or creativity.

A lifelong textile artist and former president of New Zealand’s Embroidery Association, Kath once sewed curtains for London’s iconic Globe Theatre. Now at Awatere Retirement Village, she’s brought that same flair to her flexi apartment – complete with William Morris wallpaper and a patio full of roses.

“I thought, ‘Why not?’ I love colour, I love fabric. Why shouldn’t I have the things I love just because I’m in a village? The staff have gone out of their way. Anything will be considered – it may not always be possible, but they’ll listen. The results are just what I wanted.”

Twelve months in, Kath is still living boldly – hosting Devonshire teas, playing mahjong, and proving that village life is anything but dull.

Earlier this month, in celebration of World Environment Day, residents across five Oceania villages in Auckland took a virtual dive beneath the surface, exploring the wonders of our marine environment thanks to a special partnership with environmental charity BLAKE.

The BLAKE VR experience brought Aotearoa’s underwater ecosystems to life in a fully immersive format, rekindling memories of time spent by the sea and sparking meaningful conversations about the importance of protecting our marine life.

One resident summed it up beautifully:
"I'm 99 years old and I'm surprised I can still learn things! I can't wait to tell my great, great grandchildren about it! It was marvellous!"

Last week, we were proud to be recognised at the Property Council New Zealand Awards for our Awatere Village redevelopment which won an Excellence Award for Retirement Living and Aged Care.

This multi-year project transformed the original site into a modern, connected community for older New Zealanders.

We couldn't have achieved this without our exceptional partners: Chow:Hill Architects, Watts & Hughes Construction, and the many consultants and contractors who contributed their expertise throughout every stage.

We would also like to acknowledge the dedication of our project team and Awatere staff that makes this village truly special.

We're honoured to be recognised among such strong finalists and grateful to the Property Council and judges for this acknowledgement.

To mark World Environment Day, Oceania residents picked up their paintbrushes for The Art of Conservation - a special charity auction supporting the New Zealand Nature Fund and its work to protect Aotearoa’s precious biodiversity.

Together, they raised over $1,000, with every dollar going directly to conservation efforts.

One of the highlights was at Lady Allum Care Centre, where residents embraced the occasion with all-day art sessions and an on-site exhibition for families, staff and fellow residents.

The most popular piece? Coromandel Hills by a Meadowbank Village resident - drawing 11 bids and won by one of our Hawke’s Bay village managers.

Yesterday marked a proud milestone for Oceania with the official opening of the Ōrākei Dementia Care Centre at Meadowbank Village.

This purpose-built centre completes the full continuum of care at Meadowbank, encompassing everything from independent living to rest home, hospital, and now specialist dementia care, all within one connected and supportive community.

Thoughtfully designed around a person-centred model, the new Ōrākei Building offers a safe, homelike environment that promotes dignity, independence, and holistic wellbeing for residents living with dementia.

A heartfelt thank you to Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson for joining us to cut the ribbon, and to our residents, families, and team members who made the day so special.
