The Pūriri tree (Vitex lucens) is a cornerstone of traditional Māori medicine (Rongoā). Known for its incredible durability and year-round food supply for native birds. Healing Benefits (Rongoā Māori)
Traditionally, Māori utilized the leaves and sometimes the berries for various ailments including aches, sprained joints, sore backs, and rheumatic pains.
Interesting Facts:
1. "Burial Sites": Large, hollow Pūriri trees were often used by Māori to entomb the remains of chiefs or high-status individuals.
2. "New Zealand Teak": The wood is so dense and durable that it was dubbed "New Zealand teak" or "mahogany" by early settlers. It was used for everything.
3. "Bulletproof": Legend:has it that in the 19th century, buckshot would ricochet off the dense wood of Pūriri rather than lodging in them.
4. "Host to Giants"{: It is the primary host for the Pūriri moth, which can have a wingspan of up to 15cm. The caterpillars live inside the trunk for 5–7 years before emerging as adults for only about 48 hours.
