Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where your body reacts to gluten in your diet causing damage to your small intestine. It is estimated that around 70,000 New Zealanders have coeliac disease but around 80% of these people don’t know they have it!

Common symptoms include diarrhoea or chronic constipation, weight loss, nausea, flatulence, and abdominal pain/discomfort. There are also a variety of other symptoms as per the image attached. Some people with coeliac disease do not experience symptoms but gluten still damages their small intestine. In children, coeliac disease can cause delayed growth and development, irritability and poor appetite, in addition to gastrointestinal symptoms and anaemia.

If you have any of the symptoms associated with coeliac disease you can get a blood test ordered by your GP. If this comes back positive you can be referred to one of the Gastroenterologists at the Cambridge Specialist Centre who will complete a gastroscopy and take biopsies from your small intestine to confirm the diagnosis. It is important you have gluten in your diet for at least 4 weeks before testing (equivalent of 4 slices of bread per day for adults and 2 slices per day for children).

Coeliac disease is managed with a strict lifelong gluten free diet which one of our dietitian at Cambridge Specialist Centre can help you with. Coeliac New Zealand is also a great source of information and support www.coeliac.org.nz
