Yes, guilty as charged 🙋‍♀️ but who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt around Kmart??

It really outdoes its self with affordable items that make ⚡️pregnancy and birth prep a little easier.

I even mention another item that’s helpful when you’re deep in the postpartum (I just couldn’t help myself 🙊)

One to save for later….

It’s definitely not a necessity to have a breast pump, but if you find that this is part of your feeding journey, 👆are ones that the Beautiful Beginnings Antenatal Community think are the best 👌.

🔥 I’ve ordered them from most popular through to least popular with the top 6 models named here. I had so many recommendations sent to me!

Remember that a pump can be a great tool, BUT having personalised support is the gold-standard and is ⚡️ accessible for everyone.

From your Midwife, to attending a drop-in clinic, to Internationally Certified Lactation Consultants (both publically funded and privately funded) it’s out there 🙌.

Did you know the very first “transfer”💥 in labour usually isn’t an emergency dash to the hospital?

It’s the gentle shift from your safe little bubble at home 🏡 into the birthing unit or hospital.

For some, this means they’d rather stay at home because if they need to transfer, they only want to do it once.

Tips for You and your Support Crew 👇👇

⚡️⚡️How can you make this transition from home easier on you?

1️⃣Keep using your TENS machine, acupressure balls 🐡, comb, etc.

2️⃣Pop some headphones 🎧 and keep listening to your playlists, affirmations or have them playing in the car.

3️⃣Put an eye mask 🚦 on to reduce the brightness of traffic lights, streetlights.

4️⃣Throw a dressing gown (or similar) that is easy to move in, and get on and off.

5️⃣Adjust the seating, throw a blanket in, and have a pillow to make it more comfortable to rest between surges.

⚡️⚡️Tips for the Support Person

1️⃣Drive calmly and quietly.

2️⃣Offer words of comfort ♥️ and positive talk.

3️⃣Turn notifications off & your phone on silent.

4️⃣Pop a full drink bottle 🧉 in a cup holder for Mum to grab when she’s able.

I promise homebirth isn’t the risky biscuit of birth….

✱ In fact, it’s the complete opposite.
If the idea of homebirth 😬 makes you think
“Why would you risk it?”
“What if something goes wrong?”

✱ I’m here to say 📣
That if you are well, you are seen as having a ‘low-risk’ pregnancy in obstetric circles.
You’re much more likely to have a physiological birth (no intervention) if you plan to give birth at home.

And no, this isn’t just what I’ve seen across my career as a Midwife.

✱ This is backed by research 🧐
Data collected and analysed by clever boffins looking at birth worldwide. And yes, that includes here in NZ.

Yes, you really need to enter baby gear shopping with a clear game plan.

Whether it’s the upcoming Baby Expo, the Farmers’ Market sales, or the Facebook Marketplace.

🦄 Marketing is fabulous, persuasive, and is all aimed at leaning into the fact that you want to have the best for your precious newborn.

But honestly, you want to know what you want or don’t want. Do some research, walk away from the display, grab a coffee ☕️, read reviews, and ask questions.
Take a moment to remember that it will go on sale again.

💸 Otherwise, you will walk out with fifteen boxes of breast pads, a nest, a baby toothbrush and quite possibly seventeen swaddling apparatus, which all promise to get your baby sleeping ‘through the night’*

*Spoiler swaddles that use zips or velcro to keep the baby’s arms in a set position aren’t recommended by Red Nose Trust (Australia’s safe sleep organisation). Just in case fabulous marketing convinces you to buy one or two 🏃‍♀️
