More people can now access COVID antiviral medicines.

The eligibility criteria for COVID antivirals have been widened to include disabled people and anyone with frailty or vulnerability due to one or more severe health conditions.

Antivirals can help you if you’re at risk of becoming very sick with COVID. They reduce the amount of virus in your body, so you don’t get as sick and you’re less likely to go to hospital.

Antivirals are available for:
- Māori and Pacific people aged 50+
- anyone aged 65+
- anyone aged 50+ who hasn’t completed their primary course of vaccination
- people with a severely weakened immune system or certain medical conditions.

To be eligible, you also need to:
- have COVID and symptoms, OR
- be a Household Contact and have symptoms, AND
- have become sick within the last 5 days.

Tips for summer:
1) Stay sun safe! Protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s rays (slip, slop, slap, and wrap)! 🧴🕶️
2) Use insect repellent, especially if you’re spending the day near a body of water, to avoid any pesky bites.
3) Keep aloe vera gel or a similar moituriser handy in case anyone forgets tip number 1!

It's especially important to be stocked up if you're going away on holiday.

✅ Check in with your pharmacist to see if you have any repeats or need to contact your doctor for new prescriptions.

✅ Find out now if you are eligible for free antiviral medicines in case you catch COVID, you may need to get a prescription organised in advance: https://covid19.govt.nz/testing-and-isolation/if-you-have-covid-19/medicines-to-treat-covid-19/

✅ If you’re travelling overseas, talk to your healthcare provider about recommended or required immunisations. It can take a few weeks for vaccinations to take effect, so plan ahead.

✅ Find out if the airline you are travelling with, or the country you are visiting, requires you to carry a letter from your doctor detailing your medical requirements or prescriptions.

✅ Remember, this is a busy season for GPs and pharmacies, and their opening hours might change, so get in touch early and treat them with respect.
