Our modern fear of ageing is surprisingly new. Experts say the biggest shift in attitudes has happened in just the last 200 years - barely a blink in human history and indicative of how modern life has distorted our natural instincts.

In that time, we’ve absorbed quiet, powerful lies: that youth equals worth, that ageing is decline. These beliefs shape how we see ourselves and others, often without us realising.

But here’s the good news: because this mindset is so recent, it’s not universal and it's not fixed. We can choose to reconnect with a more joyful, authentic view of growing older - one that honours wisdom, welcomes change, and celebrates the full arc of life.

Today, let's reflect on the many things we have *gained* as we've grown older - wisdom, experience, resilience, family and connections ... 🌸

Is it time we learned how to age gratefully ... and naturally? Fact: A negative attitude toward ageing has been shown to contribute to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

In our modern (Western) world, there are many ways we are disconnected from life's natural timing and tempo. And one of the most insidious ways we have de-naturalised our relationship with time is through our addiction to youthfulness and our unhealthy resistance to growing 'old'. It's a social norm that is - quite literally - robbing us of our older-age vibrancy and wellbeing.

This month, as part of my exploration into life's natural timing, I will be sharing insights about ageing and offering tips on living happier, healthier, and more enthusiastic in our later years. This is an important topic, friends! Be sure to like or leave a 🦋 in the comments to feed the algorithm.

Assertiveness isn’t pushy. It’s healthy. 🦅 Many of us hold back from speaking up assertively, worried we’ll come across as demanding or pushy. But research shows that assertiveness actually strengthens relationships. It helps us express our needs clearly, while respecting others’ boundaries - building trust and mutual understanding.

Healthy assertiveness starts with knowing what you need.
✨ When you understand your own needs, you make better decisions.
✨ You communicate with clarity.
✨ You find middle ground where your wellbeing isn’t compromised, and others feel respected too.

Being assertive is about connection - with yourself and with others. What’s one need you’ve been quiet about that deserves to be voiced today, with clarity and care?

Let’s reconnect with *convalescence*. Physician Dr Gavin Francis calls it “the lost art” and reminds us that we’ve traded rest for urgency, even in healthcare.

But healing isn’t a race. Neuroscience and trauma-informed research show that recovery thrives in calm, safe environments where the nervous system can settle and the body can recalibrate.

Historically, convalescence was a time for quiet restoration - a phase of gentle healing that was expected and respected. Reclaiming this vital phase means giving ourselves permission to heal slowly, to honour our complexity, and to resist the pressure to “bounce back.”

Whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual healing ... you don’t have to rush your recovery. You just have to honour it.

According to trauma-informed research, we heal best in environments where we feel safe, seen, and supported. That means, whether you are healing physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually:
💚 Share your story with someone who listens without fixing
💚 Limit time in spaces that rush or invalidate you
💚 Build rituals that soothe - tea, music, candles, prayer, silence
💚 Treat yourself with kindness, self-compassion, and patience

Psychological safety is the soil in which mending takes root. Please, make it a priority for yourself (and loved ones) whenever healing is taking place.

Did you know you can use sleep to unlock wise decisions and creative solutions? 🌼 When we’re awake, our logical brain takes the lead. It helps us stay organised, but it also filters reality and can limit how we see problems and opportunities.

Sleep gives our intuition space to work, making it a powerful tool for decision-making and creative thinking. Here’s a simple way to try it:
💡 Before bed, ask yourself a question you’d like clarity on.
💡 Set the intention to find insight while you sleep.
💡 Keep a pen and paper nearby.
💡 When you wake up, write down your first thoughts - before distractions kick in.

This practice helps you tap into deeper ideas that might not surface during the day. Want to explore your inner GPS further? My book/audiobook Infinite Mind shares practical ways to access intuitive wisdom in our modern world. 🔗 buff.ly/qgrgsel

In a world that rushes us to “move on,” this month I've been reminding us to move gently - particularly when we're at our most fragile.

Neuroscience shows that our parasympathetic nervous system - our rest-and-digest mode - activates through calm, rhythmic activities. This is where true healing begins. You can enhance slow healing by:
🌿 Taking slow walks in nature
🌿 Practising breathwork or gentle movement
🌿 Scheduling white space into your week; time with no agenda, no performance, no pressure

These aren’t luxuries, they’re medicine ... so let your pace be kind and your healing be slow.

Honesty isn't just the best policy - it's the best way to stay healthy and happy! Research shows that 99% of people are very honest (and only tell the occasional white lie). And, perhaps unsurprisingly, honest people enjoy a range of benefits to health, happiness, and connection. They are less likely to suffer from depression, stress, and substance abuse. They often enjoy better physical health, greater self-acceptance, enhanced personal growth, and a stronger sense of meaning in life.

It can take courage to speak the truth - to ourselves and others - but the wellbeing benefits are honestly worth it.

Does complete stillness feel difficult or awkward for you? Tip: there are huge wellbeing benefits from stilling the body and letting the mind drift!

Research has shown that when we’re calm and open, deliberate mind wandering can spark creativity, clarify goals, and unlock unexpected solutions - just as it did for our ancestors watching clouds or walking forest paths.

Take time to stop on occasion, lean into gratitude and positivity, and let the mind roam without judgement. In doing so, you may find a pathway of wisdom waiting just below the surface. 😇

When we make time and space for healing, we invite in post-traumatic growth. 🦋 Studies show that many people experience personal growth after pain, bringing greater empathy, clarity, and purpose. But this growth doesn’t come from rushing through the hurt. It comes from honouring it.

If you are healing from pain or distress, reflect on what the experience is teaching you. Ask: What values are becoming clearer to me? And, as you stich your pieces back together, leave room for new perspectives and wisdom to emerge.

Stickability isn’t just about grit. It’s about the goals we choose for ourselves. 🎯 Society loves to celebrate perseverance and tenacity, but research shows that our ability to stick with something isn’t just about willpower - it’s about alignment.

We’re more likely to persevere when our goals are:
✨ Challenging yet achievable
✨ Rooted in our core values
✨ Able to be broken down into micro-achievements
✨ Fuelled by intrinsic rewards like growth, connection, and wellbeing (not status, money, or approval).

When your goals reflect who you truly are, commitment becomes a form of self-care. So, if you’re struggling to stay motivated, don’t just push harder. Pause, recalibrate, and ask: Is this goal mine - or is it someone else’s idea of success? Because the most sustainable grit comes from goals that feel like home and authentically pull you forward.
