Thinking about GP training in 2027? Come and train with us in Manawatū.

We’re a growing Manawatū-based general practice network and are now welcoming expressions of interest for our practice-employed registrar positions for 2027.

If you’re looking for a modern, supportive, team-based training environment, we’d love to hear from you.

What we offer:
Practice-employed registrar roles
A modern multidisciplinary team environment
High-quality supervision and education
Protected teaching time
A genuinely supportive team culture
Opportunities to grow your confidence and clinical scope

This is a fantastic opportunity to train in a network that values learning, collaboration, and great patient care.

If you’re planning to enter the GP training programme next year, applications to the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) close on 22 April. Make sure you get your application in before the deadline if you want to start training in 2027.

You might spot some familiar faces in the latest issues of The Post and Focus on Manawatū – our registrars Dr Matthew Prouse and Dr Eliza Mudgway are discussing what it’s like to come home and work as GPs in Feilding. 💚

Both grew up in the Manawatū, left for medical school, and then chose to return to care for the communities that raised them. They talk about the special trust that comes from knowing your patients well, and the support they’ve found working in a teaching practice with a strong team around them.

We’re really proud to be helping train the next generation of rural and regional doctors, and to show that general practice is a challenging, highly‑skilled and rewarding career.

You can read the story in Focus on Manawatū to learn more about their journey and why “coming home” matters so much for the future of healthcare in our region. 🩺

From 1 April, New Zealand is updating how we classify prediabetes and diabetes using the HbA1c blood test, to line up with international standards.

The new thresholds are:
41 or less = normal
42–47 = prediabetes (higher risk)
48 or above = diabetes (previously this was 50 or above)

Because the diabetes threshold is moving from 50 to 48 mmol/mol, a small number of people who were previously prediabetic will now be considered to have diabetes. You can reach out to us to discuss what this means, and whether any changes to your care are needed.

If your recent blood tests put you in the prediabetes or diabetes range, lifestyle is still the cornerstone of care – things like food choices, physical activity, and weight management – with medication to support this if needed.

Your Local Health team is here to help you achieve good health and appropriately manage your diabetes risk. If you’re unsure what your HbA1c means, or have questions, book an appointment and we can talk it through.

We’re excited to share more news from our colleagues at Group Medical – who have announced their new Palmerston North health centre will be called Te Hā Health Care.

Te Hā Health Care draws on the phrase ‘Te hā o te ora’, the breath of life and wellbeing. It reflects a holistic view of health and connects to the story of Hine Ahuone, the first woman who was given the breath of life by Tāne, the Māori ātua and guardian of mankind. You can see more updates on how construction is going in the latest issue of Focus on Manawatū: https://issuu.com/apn_mediaservices/docs/focus_on_manawatu_-_march_2026

Nothing is changing for our practice – we’ll continue to provide the same care, from the same team, at the same location. We’re just proud to celebrate this milestone with our Local Health whānau! If you know of anyone in the Palmy area who is looking for a GP, they’re also enrolling now at https://groupmedical.nz/

March can be a good time to check in on your overall immunisation status, especially before the school holidays sneak up on us! Making sure MMR, whooping cough, and other routine vaccines are up to date helps protect you, your whānau, and the wider community ❤️. Flu vaccinations will also be available from the 1st April.

If you’re unsure what you or your tamariki have had, contact us - we can look it up and chat about what’s recommended for your age and situation.

At the end of February, communities around the world mark Rare Disease Day, recognising people and whānau living with rare disorders🌍💜

While each condition is uncommon on its own, together they affect many New Zealanders, often involving long journeys to diagnosis and care. If you or someone you love lives with a rare condition, know that you’re not alone - our team is here to support you with ongoing care, coordination where we can, and a listening ear when you need it.

Not every health concern needs a GP appointment. 💊🏥

Your local pharmacy can help with many common issues like minor skin infections, eye irritation, eczema, fevers and some urinary infections, all without a prescription. Pharmacists are trained health professionals and can tell you when it’s safe to treat at home and when it’s best to see a doctor or nurse. If you’re not sure where to start, chat with your pharmacy can point you in the right direction.

You’ve survived the start of work 💼, the start of school 🎒, and the year is starting to get under control (hopefully!) That means now’s the perfect time to have a good think about what matters for your health over the year ahead 💭

That might mean booking in for an overdue screening test, checking in on long-term conditions like diabetes or blood pressure, or talking about your sleep or mood if things haven’t felt right.

If it helps, 📝 jot down a couple of goals or any questions before your next appointment, so we can work through them together.

15/02/2026

We’re open and here for you today.

Our phones will be very busy first thing this morning, so please bear with us, we promise we’re working as quickly as we can to get to everyone.

If roads in your area are flooded or conditions feel unsafe, please don’t take unnecessary risks travelling. We’re very happy to offer virtual (phone) consultations where appropriate, just let our team know when you call. Stay safe.

Valentine’s Day is all about hearts, so it’s a great time to think about your actual heart too! ❤️

This Heart Health Awareness Month, why not show your manawa some aroha by checking your blood pressure, getting support to quit smoking, or having a chat about your cholesterol and diabetes risk? Even small changes - like more walking 🚶‍♀️, swapping sugary drinks 🥤, or adding an extra veg to dinner 🥦- can make a big difference over time.

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge runs through February, and it’s a great excuse to dust off the bike and enjoy the last of the summer evenings! 🚲☀️

Even short rides - to the shops, kura, or around the block - can boost mood, support heart health, and reduce stress. If biking isn’t your thing, any regular movement still helps, like walking, swimming, or even dancing in the lounge 🕺
