Not many people talk about recurrent weight gain after bariatric surgery.

Which only makes this experience feel more isolating.

Let’s change that 🤝

Recurrent weight gain is common.

It’s not a personal failure.

It’s not a willpower problem.

It’s not the surgery no longer working.

It’s not permanent.

Every week, our clinicians support many people through navigating recurrent weight gain.

If this post resonates with you, send us a message and let’s chat about what support could look like for you 🤝

If you’ve already heard about the importance of dietary fibre, the next question is usually a practical one: what should I actually eat - and how much?

Following bariatric surgery, your stomach capacity, digestion, and tolerance change significantly. This means increasing fibre isn’t about simply adding more whole grains or vegetables. Instead, it’s about choosing the right foods at the right stage, with a focus on choosing fibre sources that are appropriate for each stage of recovery and individual tolerance.

This article focuses on where to find fibre in foods and how to increase fibre intake safely and effectively at each stage after bariatric surgery.

Recurrent weight gain is the most current and clinically accurate bariatric term for significant weight gain following initial postoperative weight loss.

It was previously referred to as weight regain, but the updated terminology reflects a deeper clinical understanding of the physiological, psychological, and environmental factors involved.

There is often a great deal of fear, misconceptions, and shame surrounding weight gain after bariatric surgery. We are deeply committed to removing this stigma - because shame is not helpful, and it frequently prevents people from seeking the support they deserve.

Taking that first step is often the biggest hurdle, but it’s also the most important one to break through.

The skills you build as you navigate recurrent weight gain will not only help you work towards your immediate goals, but will also equip you to respond more confidently when future challenges arise. And when life inevitably throws the next obstacle your way - you’ll know what to do.

If you’re ready to learn the strategies to navigate recurrent weight gain with ease - comment READY and we’ll send you the link to register to our upcoming webinar where we’ll teach you everything you need to know to get started.

Recurrent weight gain (weight regain) after bariatric surgery can feel confusing, frustrating and isolating.

If you’ve experienced this and found yourself wondering “why is this happening” or “what did I do wrong” - it’s important to know that you’re not alone, and you’re not failing.

Recurrent weight gain is multifactorial - impacted by your genetics, physiology, behaviours, dietary and psychological circumstances.

It’s got VERY little to do with willpower.

It’s not a case of the surgery no longer “working.”

It’s a common and manageable part of the bariatric journey. We’re passionate about removing the shame and stigma around these experiences, and providing effective, evidence-based, and compassionate care.

If you’d like to understand more about why this happens, and what next steps to take, join us for our upcoming webinar: Navigating Recurrent Weight Gain with Registered Nutritionist, Nicole Freebairn

& it’s probably not what you think 😉

If you’ve had bariatric surgery and you feel like your hunger has come back with a vengeance 👇🏼

❌ It’s not because you’ve lost all restriction and the surgery no longer “works”

❌ It’s not because you don’t have enough willpower

It’s likely because:

👉🏻 you’re not eating in a way that supports well regulated (physical) hunger

In other words -

🎢 your blood sugars are on a rollercoaster

🥩 you might be eating enough calories but the ratios of macronutrients (carbs, fats, protein) are probably out of balance

This can lead you to experience:

✔️ hunger soon after eating
✔️ sugar & carb cravings
✔️ fluctuating and inconsistent energy levels
✔️ reactive hypoglycaemia
✔️ difficulty losing weight or weight gain over time

But the good news is that it’s all manageable, and with a few simple changes you can get back on track and feel more in control around food 🤝

If you’d like to learn how - comment WEBINAR - and we’ll send you the link to our upcoming webinar about Navigating Recurrent Weight Gain 💻
