In Hiwa Ako last week we were super lucky to be invited to watch our local schools perform in a Kapahaka festival at the Matamata College.

It was a beautiful day for a walk, we enjoyed the sunshine on the way and we were all in awe watching the incredible performances that we got to see. Even more special as we got to watch tamariki that used to attend Rose and Clive, perform with their school 🥰

We are so thankful to have been invited to this Kapahaka performance, witnessing the hard work of many tamariki as they show us their waiata and Kapahaka performance. All tamariki had huge smiles on their faces, and clapped loudly for the performers.

On our other days for Hiwa Ako, we created paper monsters with colouring and gluing on googly eyes - we had amazing creations! We’re still loving the board games, building on our memory skills and team work skills!

Kia ora e te whānau,

We’re excited to share with you our new learning experience Hiwa Ako.

Hiwa Ako, meaning "Aspiring Learners" is a dedicated time and space for our oldest tamariki to engage in more focused, intentional experiences that challenge their thinking, grow their confidence, and deepen their curiosity.

During Hiwa Ako, our tamariki are invited into rich learning experiences that require concentration, patience, creativity, and collaboration. We've been threading, constructing imaginative Lego creations, exploring textures and 3D with glue guns, and engaging in thoughtful board games, all moments that are full of opportunities to develop important life skills. It’s not just about the task — it’s about the thinking, planning, problem-solving, and working together that happens along the way.

Hiwa Ako is a chance for tamariki to strengthen key learning dispositions — perseverance, turn-taking, following instructions and managing themselves in new and sometimes challenging situations. These qualities form the foundation for lifelong learning. When tamariki are encouraged to slow down, concentrate, try again, or listen carefully to a friend, they begin to see themselves as capable, confident learners.

We are so proud of the way our tamariki have embraced this new journey. Their excitement, focus, and growing independence are a joy to be part of, and we look forward to sharing more of their Hiwa Ako experiences with you soon 😊

Today we were so lucky to be invited to visit our local ANZ branch, a few weeks ago your tamariki got busy creating beautiful daffodil flowers from their handprints, for ANZ to display inside their branch.

Today we got to go and see our wonderful artwork, we were so lucky to get given pretend coins and our own deposit slips that tamariki could deposit at the desk, in reward we got sparkly stickers each.

Thank you to the team at ANZ, and Frankie’s mum who helped us organize this fun adventure! We loved learning about the bank, and seeing our creations presented for the whole community 💛

Spending time in nature and noticing the changing weather helps tamariki build curiosity, confidence, and a strong sense of connection to the world around them. The weather, the whenua, and the taiao all have something to teach us about balance, respect, and the way everything is connected..

We’ve been busy having fun!

In all seriousness, the last 6 weeks have been a whirlwind! We had our Ministry of Education visit to do new owner checks and passed with flying colours 🙌🤓

We’ve also had a change in our structure to better support our kaiako and tamariki..

We now have a Shared Leadership Team, made up of two kaitiaki kaiako, the amazing Ali and Latoya who work closely alongside myself while supporting the wider team and whānau.

We’ve also created an admin position where we hired Tania - who is ABSOLUTELY fantastic.

These changes have been a game changer for our centre and I’m looking forward to our hard mahi coming to life through our gorgeous Tamariki in their play & learning ❤️
