Aaawww 🐾 🐾 look what the Motueka Public Library got for my mum (and me...I'll get some crumbs 😂) for saying 'Thank you' for bringing me into the Library for our regular 2024 visits. Merry Christmas to Janine and the team at the Library xx ❤️ from me and mum ❤️

"Big thanks to Claire & Lacy who volunteered for this month's Q&A, they're currently our one and only team in Motueka".

What is your name and how long have you been a therapy pet volunteer?
Claire Hutt, since June 2023

What's your dogs name, breed and age?
Lacy, Golden Labrador, turned age 3 on 21st October

How did you and your dog get involved in therapy work?
I was in Hospital in February 2023 and really missed my Lacy. It got me thinking about how much love she could give to others that are stuck in hospital or rest homes and missing their pet companions.

What is your favourite memory or experience you've had while volunteering with your dog?
Recently at the Motueka Library we had a young lady, who has special needs, with her support worker visit, especially to see Lacy. I gave her a wee treat to give to Lacy, so she said “sit Lacy” and Lacy did and then gently took the treat which tickled her hand. The absolute joy on this young lady’s face was magical. Just that one moment alone makes me love what we do.

What is your dog's naughtiest deed (while volunteering or not)/ funniest thing your dog has done during a visit?
Not naughty… but of course being a golden lab, Lacy leaves her hairy mark at most places we visit. I often think we should donate a vacuum cleaner bag for all the hair we leave behind Haha.

What is your dog's most redeeming feature that makes them a great pet/ therapy pet?
Definitely Lacy’s temperament and her ability to differentiate between peoples age and capabilities. For example going for our library visits which is predominantly toddlers which are very excitable and unpredictable. Patting, poking and giving Lacy lots of boisterous hugs. To then going to visit the elderly residents at the rest home where Lacy is immediately calm and serious.

Is there anything specific you would like to share/ ask the team (advice, suggestions - a shout-out)?
Make sure the places you visit are a good fit for you and your dog. It’s important that you have fun as well and enjoy giving up your time. Our first ever place Lacy and I visited, which we did for several weeks, just didn’t work. The people were disengaged, and Lacy was bored – so don’t be afraid to say and find other places to visit that work better.

What advice would you give a new therapy pet volunteer/ to those considering joining?
Do it!! It’s extremely rewarding.

Happy birthday to me 😁😁🐕🐶
Hello everyone, I'm 3 years old today. Mummy got me a new toy which squeaks and rustles, my favorite! ❤️. This video is of me just a few weeks old before I met Claire, my human mum xx
