"Brown bear brown bear what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me."

So starts one of my daughter's favourite children's book.

I was thinking as I woke this morning, Joy dear, Joy dear what do you see? Thinking about the power of noticing, the everyday.

Yesterday it was a cold and rainy day and frankly I wasn’t feeling particularly delighted by this. My almost two year old daughter noticed a bird outside scratching in the dirt searching for food. We had a lovely time watching the bird and noticing what it was doing. “Messsy” as it flicked the dirt. “Finding its food”…. We watched it for a number of minutes- in a day filled with groceries, baking, naps and walks in the rain this conversation was a highlight.

It all started with noticing.

The other interaction which stood out in my day was the kindness of a stranger who pushed our trolley back to the trolley park. I talked with my daughter about the wonderfulness of kindness and we talked about it a few times through out the day.

It was the noticing and putting language to it that made these events memorable through out the day.

It’s amazing to me how the simple act of noticing and talking about it and remembering that impacted very positively on an otherwise cold, wet and busy day.
