Living-donor liver transplants are nowhere near as common as those that happen with kidneys.

What is living donor liver transplantation?
A living donor liver transplantation is a surgery that removes a diseased or malfunctioning liver and replaces it with a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor. Due to the liver’s unique ability to regenerate, the partial livers of both the donor and recipient soon grow into complete organs.

Living-donor transplantation offers an alternative to waiting for a deceased-donor organ to become available for people in need of an organ transplant.

In addition, living-donor organ transplants are associated with fewer complications than deceased-donor transplants and, overall, a longer survival of the donor organ.

For the person receiving the kidney the advantages of a living donor transplant are:
• Having a transplant before the need for dialysis
• A shorter time on dialysis (this is especially important for children)
• The operation can be planned for a time that suits the potential donor
• A better success rate - the transplanted kidney usually works straight away and lasts longer
• A longer life expectancy than when living on dialysis.

The kidney donation process involves the surgical removal of one kidney from a healthy donor and transplanted into a recipient in need. In a healthy, approved donor, the remaining kidney is able to compensate for the removed kidney by increasing its functioning capacity.

Directed live liver donation also occurs and usually involves a parent donating part of their liver to their child. Live liver donation is much less common than live kidney donation because of the higher risk of complications to the donor.

Donating to someone you don’t know is called altruistic or non-directed donation. In this case, you cannot say who receives your kidney. The kidney will be given to the next best-matched patient on the kidney organ waiting list.

In New Zealand, there are currently more than 550 people waiting for an organ or tissue transplant. Sadly, some of those people will die waiting, while others will continue to lead lives restricted by long-term treatment.

The most common organ donated by a living person is a kidney. Approximately half of all kidneys transplanted in New Zealand are from living donors. Similarly, a segment of a liver can also be donated from a healthy adult and transplanted to a child or an adult, if they are a family member or close friend.
