In her book, Preparing for Birth with Yoga, Janet Balaskas suggests that many women find releasing sounds helpful in coping with intense or painful contractions.
It can be useful to practice sound breathing in labour positions from time to time throughout your pregnancy so that your body ‘learns’ to breathe spontaneously, with sound, for labour and birth. If you practice now you will do this instinctively at the time. Below are some breathing tools described, so you can give them a go at home.
Bhramari (The Humming Bee Breath)
The Humming Bee Breath involves making a series of long, humming sounds – ‘mmmmmmmmm’. It has a direct impact on the pituitary gland, which influences the ‘relaxation response’, counteracting our ‘stress response’. It can be deeply calming when done. (As described by Ana Davis, Bliss Baby Yoga)

Workshop - 'Warm-ups to do before class'
I'm running this workshop again this month, on Saturday 25th March, 4:00pm to 5:15pm.
You will receive hand-outs with instructions and photos for future reference. At the workshop we'll do all the poses/exercises together, so you get a full understanding of each one. They will consist of core strength work, block work (for the shoulders and upper back) and leg work. All the poses can be done as a mini home practice or warm ups while you are waiting for class to begin.
The cost will be $20 (you can use a concession session and top up the difference if you like)
Bookings are essential. http://www.onthemat.co.nz/book-in/ Click on the 25th March on the calendar and in the comments mention you are booking in the for workshop.

In 2017 we continue to offer a regular weekly class of The Moon Sequence. This yoga class is great for strengthening the core and opening the front of the body. Lots of gentle back bending that counters our modern way of life.

Workshop - 'Warm-ups to do before class'

I plan to run a few workshops throughout the year.
The first will be on Saturday 25th February, 4:00pm to 5:15pm.

The first topic will be 'Warm-ups to do before class'. The idea is that I'll show you a handful of poses that you can do while waiting for the class to start. You'll receive hand-outs with instructions and photos for future reference. At the workshop we'll do all the poses/exercises together, so you get a full understanding of each one. They will consist of core strength work, block work (for the shoulders and upper back) and leg work. All the poses can be done as a mini home practice or warm ups while you are waiting for class to begin.
The cost will be $20 (you can use a concession session and top up the difference if you like)
Bookings are essential. http://www.onthemat.co.nz/book-in/ Click on the 25th Feb on the calendar and in the comments mention you are booking in the for workshop.

A key aspect of Yoga is the Ujjayi breath (pronounced oo-jai).

The Ujjayi breath can be very soothing and it gives the mind something to focus on, due to the gentle aspirant sound which is generated at the base of the throat. The Ujjayi breath is also a valuable tool to learn during pregnancy, it is very centering and grounding.

I found this great video which explains how to do the ujjayi breath. But if you are pregnant and trying this out you need to keep the tummy soft which is different from the instructions on the video.
