"Pink Eye"

👁️ What’s the difference between bacterial, viral and allergic conjunctivitis? 👁️

Conjunctivitis, often called “pink eye,” can look similar no matter the cause – but the reason behind it can be quite different. Here’s how to tell them apart:

🔹 Bacterial Conjunctivitis:

• Caused by bacteria

• Symptoms: red eye, sticky yellow/green discharge, eyelids stuck together (especially in the morning), sometimes affects one eye first then spreads to the other

• Often needs antibiotic eye drops to clear up

🔹 Viral Conjunctivitis:

• Caused by viruses (often the same ones that cause colds)

• Symptoms: watery eyes, burning or gritty feeling, redness, often starts in one eye and spreads to the other, may come with cold/flu symptoms

• Usually clears on its own but can be very contagious

🔹 Allergic Conjunctivitis:

• Caused by allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander

• Symptoms: both eyes usually affected, intense itchiness, watery eyes, swelling around the eyes, often seasonal

• Not contagious – treated with allergy medicines or eye drops
