Hello Everyone, just letting you all know that ALL CLASSES are running as usual.
Keep up your training and stay well.
Thank you.

25/09/2025

Greetings everyone, hope you are all well and training hard.
There will be KYU gradings in December 2025. More information will be posted as the time gets closer.
The next Counties Shotokan Tournament will be held April 18th, 2026. Again, more information will be posted at a later time.

PLEASE if you are UNWELL DO NOT COME TO TRAINING!!!!! Think about how illness can spread and who it might spread to.
Have some consideration please and STAY AT HOME until you are TOTALLY WELL.
Feeling "a little bit better" or "I am sort of ok", does not mean that you are!!

Also, make sure you bring water with you to training. Just because it is cold does not mean you will not require water, plus you need to stay hydrated during the day. FIZZY DRINKS DO NOT HYDRATE YOU...WATER DOES!!
Ensure you have had adequate food during the day as this will help with maintaining energy for training. Eat wisely. Ice cream, donuts, lollies etc ....not good!
Ok, that's about it for now....so take GOOD CARE of yourselves and stay safe.

This is a shout-out to Senpai's Hayden and Hayley from Hokitika Dojo who visited the Waiuku Dojo on Wednesday 17th September.
They stayed for both sessions, giving the students some invaluable advice and encouragement to help improve their Kata for the up coming Tournament on Saturday.
Thank you both for your time and knowledge, it was most appreciated by all.

WAIUKU DOJO URGENT MESSAGE!!!
Training will be held in Massey Park tonight as the school is having a drama production which they did not inform Sensei about until the last minute.
We apologize for any hassle this may cause, it is out of our control.
See you there!!

11/09/2025

Hello again everyone, well...Tournament time is fast approaching so here are a few things that you should know.

BE ON TIME!! Registration time is between 8.00am and 9.00 am.

Make sure your Gi is CLEAN and IRONED. Nothing looks worse than a dirty uniform and it's disrespectful.
NO JEWELLERY!!! Especially if you are competing in Kumite. Earings/toe rings etc; are dangerous. If something gets caught in them, it could be very messy!!!!
HAIR, girls and boys, MUST BE TIED BACK. Please do not use fancy clips or hair combs.
FINGERNAILS / TOENAILS must be clean and cut back to level with the tip. NO ONE wants to be scratched by long nails. REMEMBER this is a KARATE TOURNAMENT, not a fashioh show!
Make sure you have a GOOD BREAKFAST before you come as it will be a looooong day, especially for the young ones.
Water is essential, for the same reason. Soft drinks are not that good for hydration.

ETTIQUITE: Most important thing of all.
Show respect to ALL those you see wearing a JACKET, TIE and LONG PANTS. These people will be judging/refereeing the Tournament.
Also show your respect to ALL BLACK BELTS no matter what style they are from. If you know them personally refer to them by their Karate title....SENSEI or SENPAI.
If you do not know them ask how they wish to be addressed. They will appreciate your respect.

MAT ETTIQUITE: Under no circumstances must you walk in front of ANY judges or referees. This is TOTAL DISRESPECT!
KATA mats will have a chair on the corners of the mat......STAY ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE MAT.
For Kumite, again stay on the outside of the mat. Bow onto the mat and take up your ready position. When the bout has finished bow off the way you came on....DO NOT CUT ACROSS or JUST WALK OFF the mat.

ALWAYS show respect for your fellow competitors, regardless of who they are, what rank they are, or how old they are.

Tournament day should be a day where you not only compete against others but also against yourself.
No matter where you come in your competition, enjoy the day and learn. You can learn alot from watching others compete. Doesn't matter what style, rank, age....there is something you can learn from all of them.

Have a wonderful day and take care of yourselves...see you there!

Greetings everyone, hope are all staying well and training hard for the up coming Gradings in August.
How many of you know what Soji or Sojido is?
Here is an excerpt from an article regarding this subject taken from the website Sojido.com

"Sojido" (ๆŽƒ้™ค้“), in Japanese, translates to "the way of cleaning" or "the way of the cleaning". It refers to a practice, often found in martial arts dojos, where students clean the training space together after class, regardless of rank, as a way to show respect for the space and each other. It's more than just physical cleaning; it embodies responsibility, humility, and respect.

Here's a more detailed explanation.
Sojido is not solely about sweeping or mopping. It's a practice that emphasizes responsibility, humility, and respect for the space the equipment and fellow practitioners.

In many martial arts dojos, students participate in Soji, or Sojido, as a way to maintain the cleanliness and order of the training environment.

While rooted in martial arts, the principles of Sojido can be applied to various aspects of life, including homes, schools, and public spaces, promoting a sense of order and focus.

The principles of Sojido include simplification (reduction/clearing out), deliberate design, empowerment, focus, accountability, daily action, discipline, and respect for spaces and self.

In most martial Arts schools, particularly those with wooden floors, soji was performed with students crouched side by side, in a line, with cleaning cloths stretched tight end to end and on the command "hajime" (begin) they would kiai and scurry across the floor, staying together. The process was repeated on the way back and to the satisfaction of the Sensei. If not, it was done again. NO ONE went home until this was finished.

They took PRIDE in the Dojo and showed RESPECT for it, something which is sadly lacking these days.
So next time you are in YOUR Dojo, take an extra few minutes after class, grab a cloth and clean. Don't just "dab" at it, give a good wipe or mop or whatever needs doing.

Just remember your Sensei is not a janitor!! He/she is there to teach, NOT to clean up after you. They have done their share, now the responsibility falls to the rest of us. If you don't want to clean it....then DON'T USE IT!!

Take care.

Hello everyone, hope you are all well. This time of year can bring in all manner of colds, flu, viral infections etc; and this has resulted in a number of people becoming quite ill. Remember PLEASE....if you are unwell STAY AT HOME, REST, GET BETTER. Bringing your illness to training is not fair on others or yourself.
Make sure you bring a warm jacket or jumper to put on after training so that you don't chill down to quickly....this is when you can become ill. Also, WATER!! Just because it is winter does not mean you don't need as much water. You will still sweat during training.

GRADING: Start preparing yourselves for the August Grading....that is NEXT MONTH, so get in as much training as you can.
GRADING DATES:
White and Red Belt Grading - Wednesday 13 Aug.
