The QA boys checking the incoming yummy lucerne. We are super fussy round here, it must be free of weeds and properly dried with leaf. Had to come from another area this year 😅

Nutrition basics - Fibre (bulk matters to your horses digestive system)

Dry Matter, what is left behind after moisture is removed. Contains main nutrients.

A 20 kg bag of Dry chaff has approximately 18kg of Dry Matter
A 20kg bag of wet chaff has approximately 9kg of Dry Matter

Wet chaff $35-40 per bag, approx 20kg bag
Dry chaff $48-50 per bag, approx 20kg bag

Dry Matter (the cost of nutritional component)

Dry chaff $1.50 kg DM
Wet chaff $3.90kg DM

From a volume perspective (as fed), if you want to feed the same amount of nutrients as found in Dry chaff, for every kg of Dry chaff you'd need to feed 2kg of wet chaff

Wet chaff is a super product, but if you're looking to reduce the cost of nutrients in your fibre portion of your feed, this is how you can do it.

I've done this with my own horses and they look great, I continue to use (dry) lucerne for it's gut buffering properties (well documented and proven inherent properties of Lucerne).

Lucerne is great for nutrition and gut health

It contains protein and calcium known to help buffer the equine gut (reduce acidity) and aid in the prevention of ulcers

Low in sugar, yes that's right, lower in starch and sugar than any grass!

Contains essential amino acids (proteins that can't be made by the body and must come from diet). Amongst other things these are needed for hair, hoof and skin health

The fibrous qualities of Lucerne act as a food source for the microbial population in the hindgut - producing slow release energy

And best of all, theres not many horses can resist the taste of Lucerne hay or freshly chopped chaff 💚
