Ever feel like Truman Burbank from The Truman Show - living a life that feels scripted, on repeat, while everyone else seems to watch?

Here’s the truth: a lot of us do. By 35, much of who we are - our habits, our reactions, even our emotional patterns, are running on autopilot (Joe Dispenza).

We’re not choosing these old patterns; we’re following deeply conditioned scripts.
And yes, this shows up in everything: work, relationships, wellbeing… and even in struggles we label “addiction.”

At its core, addiction is just a loop in the brain, a programme stuck on repeat. Not a failing. Not broken. Just a pattern that can be rewritten.

Einstein said it best: “We cannot solve problems with the same level of thinking that created them.”

So here’s my question for you: what patterns are quietly running your life right now? Pause. Notice. Begin quietly rewriting. Awareness is the first step - everything else follows.

I came across something this week that really landed with me…

Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love) shared on a podcast how addiction often creates three lives instead of the usual two:
1. Public life – the face we show the world
2. Private life – what close friends and family see
3. Secret life – hidden at all costs, because if anyone knew, it could unravel the other two.

The shame and mental energy it takes to hold those three worlds apart is immense.
But here’s the truth: addiction isn’t a personal failing. It’s a pattern - a programme in the brain. And like any programme, with the right support, self-love, and commitment to change, it can be rewritten.

Imagine if we approached this with compassion and curiosity instead of judgement? How many more people might feel safe enough to seek support earlier… or start an honest conversation with someone they trust?

That’s when real transformation begins.
This is the work I care deeply about: changing the narrative and creating space for people to reprogram the patterns that no longer serve them.

Seventeen years ago, I met Wayne in an addiction rehab centre.

Today, we sat down together to talk honestly about life, alcohol, and the moment that changed everything - rock bottom.

This episode isn’t just about addiction. It’s about courage, honesty, and rewriting the stories that keep us stuck.

The Kiwi Blind Spot Problem

Ever wondered why we keep finding ourselves in the same loops - personally and in our organisations?

Here’s the thing: the real enemy isn’t mistakes. It’s ignoring what we can’t (or won’t) see.

Companies like Dyson and IDEO thrive because they 'seek' blind spots. They pull ideas apart, fail fast, learn faster. That’s how real growth happens.

In New Zealand, our “she’ll be right / No. 8 wire” mentality has its strengths - it’s a practical, resourceful, quick-fix. But it can also hold us back.

Some of our top thinkers have pointed out that casual approaches to serious challenges often breed complacency, fuzzy frameworks, and repeated mistakes.

And here’s the thing - no one else is coming to fix this for us. The responsibility for change is ours.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see a society where organisations and individuals shine a torch on these blind spots instead of avoiding them.

So what now?

1. Challenge assumptions
2. Test ideas early
3. Face discomfort
4. Transform patterns that no longer serve us.

Your blind spots may just be your biggest opportunities.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." – Carl Jung

Here’s the thing:
The same blind spot that keeps you avoiding a tough conversation with your partner…
is the very same one that stops you from giving honest feedback at work.

We’ve been told we can “separate” who we are at home from who we are at work. But that’s not true. We’re not boxes stacked on a shelf. We’re whole, messy, interconnected humans.

And those blind spots?
They don’t stay neatly tucked away in one part of life.
They spill. Everywhere.

The partner who can’t take feedback creates a home that feels unsettling.
The leader who can’t take feedback creates a workplace allergic to growth.

But here’s the good news: once you see a blind spot, you can’t unsee it. And that’s the beginning of real transformation.

Because when you own your patterns, instead of pretending they only live in one corner of your life, you stop running on autopilot.

You start creating connection, adaptability, curiosity, intimacy, innovation.

Blind spots aren’t just for driving.

They’re the hidden habits quietly steering your relationships, your leadership, and your results.

What if the things frustrating your partner, kids, or friends… are the very same ones limiting you at work?

Spot them → shift them → transform.
It’s that simple (and that hard).

What if… addiction wasn’t what we’ve been told it is?

Not failure. Not weakness. Not “bad choices.”
What if it’s the body calling out for reconnection?

Because sometimes it’s not about the wine.
It’s about the overwhelm beneath it.
The rituals we never learned.
The rest we were never taught to take.

In many traditional cultures, addiction isn’t even a word that exists in the way we use it.
Why? Because connection to nature, to body, to each other, is woven into daily life.
🌀 In Ayurveda, addiction is understood not as a flaw, but as a sign of disconnection from our natural rhythms, our emotions, and our inner wisdom.

So maybe it’s not about being stronger.
Maybe it’s about being softer.
Not numbing harder but noticing sooner.
Not pushing through but pausing gently.

You’re not broken. You’re tired.
And that’s a totally different story.
Let’s start listening, before the body starts screaming.

This is week 4 of our series: “Rethinking What We’ve Been Told — Especially When It Comes to Women.”

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been unpacking some of the hidden scripts that shape our lives:
1. What pain means and the external influences on our nervous system
2. How hormones and health are oversimplified
3. Why we often feel off-balance without knowing why.

Now let’s talk about alcohol, advertising, and what’s been cleverly sold as ‘freedom.’
Empowerment that is marketable.
From low-tar ci******es to skinny margaritas, we’ve been sold the dream of liberation:

Meanwhile:
1. Women are drinking more
2. Teenage girls are using substances more than boys
3. And our bodies? Not built for this hustle-harder, numb-faster culture.

Even the United States Surgeon General is now stating that “There is no safe amount of alcohol for women”.
(Oh and we break down alcohol differently, and by “differently,” we mean - worse.)

This isn't about shame.
It’s about awareness.

Let’s call it what it is: Marketing with a side of manipulation.

And we’re not buying it anymore.
Because real empowerment doesn’t come in a bottle.

Let’s stay curious. Let’s see through the spin.

And most of all let’s build our version of freedom.
