Health Te Aroha

Health Te Aroha Health Te Aroha is a general practice, open 5 days a week, with a nurse phone triage available 24 h Health Te Aroha started in the late 1990’s.

Tertius Coetzer and Paul Henry amalgamated three of the four solo practices in Te Aroha into one practice and named it Health Te Aroha. This practice moved into a purpose built building in 2001 where it has stayed until today. During this time we brought pharmacy, pathlab, physio and the dentist into the building. We also offer specialist appointments, a midwife and diabetes nurse specialist. In 2005 Brendon Eade joined the practice and Health Te Aroha was first given CORNERSTONE accreditation the year after in 2006. Hayley Scott then joined the practice as a GP in 2007, becoming a director in 2010. In 2012 we became one of the first privately owned practices in Midlands Health Network to adopt the Health Care Home. This change is now well embedded in the practice. In December 2016 we said farewell to Paul Henry as he retired from the practice, and Melissa Titterton who joined us as a GP in 2014, stepped up to full time to take over his patients. We currently have 5500 patients and we offer care to the local community, covering the local rest homes, the community trust hospital and also college clinics. Since 2006 the practice has been active in teaching. We take fourth and sixth year medical students and also have registrars engaged in their education at the practice. We are a practice that is quality focussed and enjoys innovation and being at the forefront of general practice. The practice has prided itself on performing well in the quality plan with Midlands Health. In 2016 we achieved first place in the PHO for our quality performance.

Prescription Update – What You Need to Know.

From February 2026 the NZ government will allow clinician's to write prescriptions for up to 12 months – but not everyone will qualify.
You may be eligible if your condition is stable and your medication hasn’t changed. Some patients still need 3-6 monthly reviews to stay safe. Controlled drugs (like strong pain killers or sleeping pills) are not included.
Even if the law allows it, the prescriber’s job isn’t just to write prescriptions. They still need to check in with you regularly and ensure that your treatment is right for you, that you’re not having side effects, and nothing in your health has changed. It’s about clinical responsibility - what’s safe and right for you, not just legal rules.
Regular reviews help to catch any changes in your condition early, adjust medications if needed and make sure your treatment is still the best option for you.
So even if you feel fine, your clinician may still need to see you before giving you a longer prescription. It’s not about red tape – it’s about keeping you safe and well.

Do you have a pessary and are currently travelling to Waikato Hospital to have this managed?
We are pleased to announce we are offering a new pessary service!
We have a clinician who can assess prolapse, measure and order pessaries; fit and change them.
You do not need to be enrolled at our practice to access this service, it is open to everyone who needs it.
The initial assessment incurs a standard consult fee; but then there is funding available for the device, fitting and change/checks meaning pessary management is FREE.
