We are at a turning point in the seasons - you may have also started noticing the change of colour in the leaves, the cooler mornings, and the pull in the body to slow down. Have you become aware that autumn is now well and truly here?
Ayurveda, the embodied "science" of alignment with nature, the living wisdom in all of creation, suggests that in this season, we have to honour the shift in order to maintain balance in our health and nervous system - or, in other words, in body and mind.
In autumn, the intensity of summer (characterised by Pitta dosha) transforms into the cool and dry qualities of air/ wind and movement (Vata dosha). What that means in practicality, is that we may experience discomforts related to irregular digestion, lowered immunity, catching seasonal bugs, dryness in the body or skin, a scattered or overactive mind and/ or feelings of anxiety and worry (certainly further fuelled by watching the news).
While we recognise that some of that is a natural adjustment mechanism, we can also take steps to re-balance and orient to stability and resiliency (a word that keeps coming back to me, as what we all seem to need right now - to be resourceful and resilient).
Here are a few examples of such simple practices:
🍂 Return to rhythm - of waking, eating, of practice... as I shared in a recent newsletter, rhythm truly becomes a medicine when everything else may feel a little less predictable
🍂 Reduce device time and mental stimulation, especially in the evening, to calm the nervous system and reduce Vata agitation
🍂 Lean towards warm, simple, cooked meals that are easy to digest but nourishing
🍂 Slow down the pace where possible, creating short (or longer if you can!) pauses in the day rather than rushing from one thing to the next
🍂 Ground the body daily through connection with the body (movement, āsana or self-massage)
These small gestures alone can make a profound difference in how the seasonal shift will affect you.
Let me know which one you're keen to try!
