Our staff wore their favourite hoodie for “Hoods Up, Volume Down”, an initiative which will officially take place 29 April, where for one hour we’re all encouraged to reduce lights and noise.

Two medical professionals from the Vanuatu National Hospital have recently completed an oncology placement at Rotorua Hospital, gaining hands-on experience that will help strengthen cancer care services back in their home country.

With support through the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme (NZMTS), the attachment provided Junior Medical Registrar in Internal Medicine, Dr Terina Bangalini, and Registered Nurse, Rebecca Naomi Daniel, with the opportunity to observe and learn from a multidisciplinary oncology team, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and haematologists.

A visiting team of urology specialists has recently completed a deployment to Tonga, delivered through the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme (NZMTS), working alongside clinicians at Vaiola Hospital to provide specialist surgical care while supporting the continued development of local clinical capacity.

Consultant urologist, Associate Professor Dr Philip McCahy, who was part of the visiting team, said the programme is centred on partnership with the local health workforce.

The PMA family would like to congratulate PMA Board Director, Professor Sir Collin Tukuitonga, on being inducted as one of 13 new Fellows of the Pacific Academy of Sciences. The Fellows were formally inducted at the Academy’s inaugural congress held last month in Apia, Samoa.

“Being admitted as a Fellow is recognition that we have been successful in the fields we work in.

"It is recognition from your peers. It is not an outsider making a judgement. It is people who understand the work acknowledging that contribution.”
