Update on Covid-19 vaccine programme

The Covid-19 vaccine programme will be the most significant immunisation event in New Zealand history, and pharmacists will play a crucial role in its success.

At a glance:
• We expect vaccines to be delivered to the first group of people in the second quarter of 2021.
• Any vaccine available will be approved by Medsafe so it meets strict health and safety requirements.
• COVID-19 vaccines will be free of charge.
• They will not be mandatory for the New Zealand public.
• Securing COVID-19 vaccines through Advance Purchase Agreements with pharmaceutical suppliers mean we will secure enough vaccines for the entire country, several times over.
• There will be a sequenced rollout plan so that the appropriate vaccines are made available to people at the right time.
• First priority will be border and Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) staff.
• Then border workers and essential staff like general practitioners, nurses and pharmacists
• The general public will most likely be vaccinated in the second half of the year. The vaccine should be available to the public from pharmacies with qualified vaccinators.
• The Ministry of Health can’t say how vaccines will impact our borders at this time.
