Has your baby discovered how to pull your hair yet? When little hands grab your hair they are actually deep in an amazing phase of sensory and nervous system development!

Here’s the science in a snap:

🔍 Texture Explorers: Your hair is a tactile goldmine! It's finer, softer, and more complex than any toy. This intense tactile input is vital for mapping their body and developing their sense of touch.

🧠 Cause & Effect: A pull equals a reaction (and maybe a little ouchie from Mum!). They are learning a huge neurological lesson: "My action (pull) has a predictable result (your head moves!)." This is foundational for cognitive development.

🧘 Self-Soothers: Repetitive motions - like twirling or holding your hair while feeding - can be a gentle way to regulate their overwhelmed or tired nervous system, helping them shift towards a calmer, 'rest and digest' state.

It’s just proof they’re developing exactly as they should be!

✨ Quick Tip: The moment those little fingers get close, gently unlock their grasp and immediately swap your hair for a textured toy, a soft teething ring, or a sensory ribbon. You are satisfying their developmental need while keeping your nervous system calm and your hair safe! 😉

When children first start to move and walk, they have to actively think about their movements. This makes it hard for the brain to concentrate and learn anything else.

If a child doesn’t get it — if he is clumsy and walks oddly — it is hard for him to move on to other skills because his brain is so preoccupied with trying to control movements.

When a child learns to walk and move naturally, however, the brain no longer has to think about these things. Movement becomes subconscious.

Great post from Wellesley Chiropractic
Distortions in the frontal bone (forehead) often begin at the cranial base—where the butterfly-shaped sphenoid bone lives. When this area is under strain, it can lead to an elongated or squamous forehead.

But it’s not just about appearance. These shifts can affect the growth and positioning of vital facial structures—like the mouth and jaw—and influence feeding, breathing, and speech development.

Is there anything more heart-melting than the fierce strength your baby shows when they curl their tiny fingers around yours? That involuntary squeeze isn't just adorable - it's the Palmar Grasp Reflex, a critical part of their nervous system development!

When your baby grasps:
1 Reflex Integration: This primal reflex is integrating, paving the way for those fantastic voluntary movements and fine motor skills later on.

2.Sensory Feedback: The pressure sensation provides vital input to the brain, building body awareness and helping them feel grounded.

3.Vagal Nerve Connection: The sense of security and connection is a powerful regulator. It calms their system, promoting rest and digest for better feeding and sleep.

So soak up the beautiful moments, and celebrate those tiny hands and the huge milestones they represent! 💞

The funny thing about the proprioceptive sense is that when it is diminished or lost, no one — parents or child — realizes it because it is the one sense that is mostly subconscious. We are much more familiar and consciously aware of the other senses such as vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Proprioception, however, is more essential to the brain because it is the only sense that is constant. It works closely with the vestibular system, which also is mostly subconscious.

Pregnancy can impact ALL parts of the back.

- Extra strain is put on the lumbar spinal vertebra.

- The mid spine can become aggravated from a growing baby that causes the lower rib cage to expand.

- Upper thoracic strain due to increased breast size can be a problem for some women.
Pelvic subluxation can also occur.

Chiropractic can help you better manage these changes and often relieve the associated pain.
