We are very stoked to be given the chance to work with the amazing group of skaters at BOWLZILLA once again and getting to go back to the Gold Coast for the last bit of southern summer fun. Pack your bags and get in touch and we'll tell you how to get there.

“BOWLZILLA IN NUMBERS TOO BIG TO IGNORE”

BOWLZILLA Gold Coast 17/03/2018 – Elanora Skatepark

Yeah Girl and Surf Dive ‘n Ski along with International Skateboarder’s Union, Australian Skateboarding Federation and Miryoku Agency are breaking boundaries and setting standards this year at BOWLZILLA Gold Coast.

Yeah Girl and Surf Dive ‘n Ski have partnered up to assist BOWLZILLA in creating the highest paid Equality-in- Skateboarding event in Australian history. Australian Skatepark League launched 2017 with equal pay for the first time in Australia in both the Open and Women’s divisions and in 2018 BOWLZILLA Gold Coast gratefully acknowledges and raises that bar. As the international women’s skateboarding community grows stronger and blazes their own path, BOWLZILLA is proud to do its part in supporting them.

“To be able to work with BOWLZILLA and help to raise funds for an equal prize purse is an honour. It’s something that the women’s skate community has been constantly pushing for and it's great to finally have events like BOWLZILLA, that support the push for equality and recognise the talent and dedication in women's skateboarding." Yeah Girl – Director; Sarah Huston.
The foundation all of this is built on is the incredible support and recognition of skateboarding by City of Gold Coast. CoGC has built more skateparks per capita than any other city in Australia which has provided the best stage to produce an event like BOWLZILLA Gold Coast. This year Tourism and Events Queensland are facilitating the opportunity to promote and boast about that epic achievement and the fantastic community it represents.

The Queensland Government, via Tourism and Events Queensland, is proud to support BOWLZILLA which features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Queensland, just the place to experience Australia’s best live events.

BOWLZILLA Gold Coast is not just a skateboard competition, it is a festival of skateboarding. As part of the festival this year there is; a girl’s learn to ride clinic with Yeah Girl, Gold Coast Skateboard Coaching and Surf Dive ‘n Ski, art shows, food and parties with Beach Burrito Company, Yeah Girl and Surf Dive ‘n Ski and loads of gathering and sessions at the many amazing skateparks the Gold Coast has to offer.

City of Gold Coast Councillor Daphne McDonald has given huge support to skateboarding on the Gold Coast through; funding facilities, upgrading and maintaining those facilities so they can support amazing events like BOWLZILLA Gold Coast and even supporting those events that promote the best of the Gold Coast community both near and far. “I am proud to partner with BOWLZILLA for the third consecutive year and sponsor the largest meet for skaters in Queensland at Pines Skate Bowl at Elanora. The growth of BOWLZILLA is really exciting as the Gold Coast sets the stage for this first class athletic and creative international event. BOWLZILLA is a festival bringing together, world champion and local skaters , music and art. An event for the whole of the Gold Coast community to enjoy.” City of Gold Coast – Councillor Daphne McDonald.

Park skating is one of two skateboard disciplines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. More and more riders from around the world are being drawn to this fast moving, exciting and fun part of skateboarding. With the growth in public skateparks around the world which means easier and less restricted access to this type of skating plus how much fun it is, it is no wonder it is the fastest growing part of the community.

“BOWLZILLA Gold Coast is the biggest gathering of skateboard generations in Australia at a by skaters for skaters event. We are about our community 100%. The incredible support we receive from GCCC, TEQ, Yeah Girl x Surf Dive ‘n Ski, ASF and everyone else in supporting skaters as they want to be supported and represented is something we work very hard to honour year in year out. What we are achieving this year is a huge testament to our communities strength. Equality in Skateboarding has taken another step forward. ” Chad Ford; BOWLZILLA – Director.

“BOWLZILLA SHAKING THE CAPITAL”

BOWLZILLA Wellington 10/03/2018

New Zealand skating is put on the world stage at BOWLZILLA Wellington 2018. Wellington City Council, International Skateboarder’s Union, Redhead or Dead Events, Skateboarding New Zealand and Miryoku Agency are all combining forces to get Wellington shaking.

BOWLZILLA Wellington is the all-encompassing New Zealand National Bowl / Park Skating Titles. SBNZ the National Governing body of skateboarding in NZ, sanctions this event as the National competition series final. With such great honour, all stops are pulled out to ensure it is the biggest celebration of skateboarding and its culture all year in New Zealand.

There is excitement building for this third year of BOWLZILLA Wellington; 10th March at Waitangi Park, Wellington. The competition is on for the next National Champions with divisions for 16 & Under, Women, Masters 40+ and Pro/Am Open. With; art shows, parties, music, gatherings, barbecues, good times and the competition itself, BOWLZILLA Wellington is going to be the greatest weekend of New Zealand skating in 2018.

With BOWLZILLA Wellington taking on such an important role in the national landscape and the partnership with national governing body SBNZ and skateboarding now an official Olympic sport, there is greater interest and support coming from national government agencies and the public at large. When you add in that the Oceania representative rider Bowman Hansen at this year’s Park World Champs comes from Taupo, New Zealand, there are big things ahead for New Zealand skateboarding and BOWLZILLA Wellington on the 10th of March 2018 is the biggest stage for it.

"What a year for New Zealand skateboarding! Bowman Hansen has done us all proud and proven what we have been saying all along – we have the best talent pool of skaters in New Zealand. We have had a big year of behind the scenes planning, to lay the ground work for a stable platform for New Zealand skateboarding for a long time into the future. Having BOWLZILLA Wellington as our National Final is the feather in the cap" Jesse Peters, Director – SKATEBOARDING NEW ZEALAND - SBNZ

To create fantastic opportunities like these for skateboarders in New Zealand you need great support, that is provided by; Wellington City Council, SBNZ, International Skateboarder’s Union, Fusion Surf/Skate, Manual Magazine, Manky Chops, and the organisational skills of Redhead or Dead Events and Miryoku Agency. They have all pooled together to build events that help nurture scenes, create opportunity for local skaters and create amazing moments to celebrate all that make New Zealand skateboarding great with art, music and the competitions.

“Art, music, parties, friends and the best skating of the year all mixed together in the funnest town in New Zealand. BOWLZILLA Wellington is going to be the biggest celebration of our friends and their talent for 2018 in New Zealand. We invite everyone to come and be part of it.” BOWLZILLA Director – Chad Ford.

BOWLZILLA was born out of likeminded friends in the skateboard community looking for new platforms to promote their friends extraordinary talents, talents that run in oversupply within skateboarding but not are often seen in the outside world. BOWLZILLA Wellington is the biggest platform for showcasing all of this amazing talent in skateboarding in New Zealand. There is an open invite for everyone to come and be part of the celebration.

The will be more information coming shortly about all the great events happening as part of BOWLZILLA Wellington 2018.

FIRS evolves into World Skate to support growth on the Road to the Tokyo
2020 Olympic Games and Beyond

The Fédération Internationale Roller Sports (FIRS) and the International
Skateboarding Federation (ISF) announce intent to join forces. The ISF will flow
into FIRS under the World Skate name

Lausanne, Switzerland and Woodward, Pennsylvania, USA — The Fédération Internationale Roller Sports (FIRS) and the International Skateboarding Federation (ISF) look to join forces under the World Skate name following approval by the FIRS Congress next September. World Skate will provide a more modern platform for the management of all skate disciplines, while allowing autonomy for the governance, development and management of Skateboarding through a commission chaired by Gary Ream.

Sabatino Aracu, President, Fédération Internationale Roller Sports: “For decades our federation has been a multisport organization, always ensuring the autonomy of its disciplines and preserving at the same time their essence and integrity. We knew that to ensure the proper representation of Skateboarding in Tokyo, it was necessary to involve the associations that represent the whole of Skateboarding culture including top athletes, event organisers, community organisations, NGOs, and industry advisors. Only in this way the unique identity of the skateboarding community can be preserved and celebrated.”

Gary Ream, President, International Skateboarding Federation: “We have worked hard to make sure that the inclusion of Skateboarding in the Olympics respects and celebrates the culture skateboarders have built over the past 70 years. Upon the successful integration of the ISF into FIRS as World Skate we will be in best position to not only put on an incredible show in Tokyo, but also to protect the history of and seize the Olympic opportunity to properly maximize the development of Skateboarding around the globe.”

IOC Sport Director, Kit McConnell expressed that “The inclusion of skateboarding in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 provides a unique opportunity to showcase the sport and also drive its longer term development around the world. Through the rebranded World Skate, FIRS and the ISF are actively demonstrating a shared vision which not only celebrates the existing skateboarding communities around the world, but will benefit skateboarding and skateboarders through to the Olympic Games Tokyo and beyond."

So there it is for you, the latest information about international skateboard governance and the Olympics. Make of it what you will.

At ISU we have always been 100% supportive of and in fact part of ISF. We feel skateboarding should be represented by skaters. There are now and always have been those outside of skating that look at it as a commodity and skaters as just units rather than friends and family. With ISF, at least it is our friends and family at the table.

We help crew put on competitions because it gets our friends together for a good time, giving them a platform to promote themselves and their talents and give them a little something to show our graitude for the amazing effort they put into keeping our lifestyle fun. It is about building community.

The Olympics was never a dream, an ambition, a what if, it just wasn't something we saw as relevant to us and our friends. Is it now with 2020? We'll see.

What we do know is, there are a lot of amazing people who work tirelessly to make skating possible and those people are not thanked very often. We are friends with that crew and will do whatever we can to have their back. The Olympics is going to bring funding into skating and with the right people at the table we will hopefully be able to see that go toward groups and people that put everything into getting skateparks, putting on gatherings, doing community outreach, mentoring and all the other forgotten and thankless tasks.

When companies and governments look to want to get into skating now, they will see an international governing body that has skaters as its board and they will realise they need to deal with us and that allows us to now more than ever say how we want things.

None of this is going to affect how you skate and you and your friends going for a roll. It is still and always has been up to you. It has the possibility of giving us all more opportunity if we so choose. It is really simple though; if you don't like the show, change the channel.

JUDGING:

Three (3) judges with one (1) acting as head judge who will also score. Head judge ensures other judges are understanding of format and judging criteria.

BOWLZILLA™ is a bowl competition and therefor will be judged according to bowl skating style. Bowl skating has its emphasis on style and flow. Tricks are complementary to the riders run rather than being the focus of the run

Judging is based on:
Use of the bowl: Each bowl is unique and therefor requires a unique approach. Elanora bowl has these things to consider use of in a line: two ends, full pipe, corners, hips and extension. A well rounded run in this bowl will utilise as many of these features in a fluid bowl skating approach. If a skater spends the majority of their time utilising just one area of the bowl performing tricks, their run will be scored down.

Style: the fluid linking of bowl features and how individual tricks are performed within the run (i.e. continuity of line).
Content: bowl skating dictates that tricks are complementary to the whole run. If the tricks appear awkward and singular rather than part of the whole run they may be marked down. If the tricks are fluid and complimentary to the run then; the number, difficulty, originality and variety of tricks successfully performed will add to the score.

Note: These categories are weighted by the individual judge’s subjective opinion. Judges decision is final. Skateboarding is judged subjectively rather than objectively so it is fair to assume different people will have different ideas on results.

Run points:
Scoring is out of 100 per run.
The top two scores will be taken and the bottom two scores will be thrown away. In the event of a tie the riders other scores will be taken into consideration to form a tie breaker.

The top 8 scored riders will go through to the final. The final riders are chosen by top score across all heats and not by top skaters from each heat.

Run point distribution for judging guidance; 90-100 best runs of day – these runs should sit between; 90-100 and are usually reserved for the finals to ensure a lifting of scores throughout the competition. 80-90 top scoring heat runs sit within this range. A run within this bracket will consist of use of whole bowl, fluid and fast approach, tricks are complementary to the run and there is a variety with a mix of difficulty and originality. 70-80 runs within this range are generally smooth and consistent, use the whole bowl, fill the allotted time of 35 seconds per run but may not have the most spectacular approach. 60-70 a rider may not complete a run but within their run may use the bowl well and do some amazing tricks or a rider may do a very trick focused run that only utilises a portion of the bowl rather than all of it or the rider may be consistent but not perform a run that stands out against the other skaters. 50-60 a rider may only last 5 or 6 walls but do a couple of tricks that really stand out but did not have a long enough run or the rider may use the whole time but not perform a spectacular run that stands out. 30-50 the skater dropped in a got one or two tricks but nothing was spectacular. 0-30 the skater dropped in and did nothing.

Falls:
A subjective penalty will be assessed, and the following will be taken into consideration when determining the amount of penalty: First wall rebate; if the rider falls on the very first wall they get to start over. Not the second wall. The rider must race to restart their run as quickly as possible. If they do not it is at the discretion of the head judge that the MC may start the clock on the run at the head judge’s discretion. When the clock hits 35 seconds the run is over, regardless of when the rider decides to start their run. What was being attempted when the fall/step off occurred? How the overall fluidity of the run was affected. Ability to recover and continue the continuity of the run.
