In 2006, five representative aflaj were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List a recognition of a living system that continues to shape daily life across the country.

🐪 Camels in Dhofar: a real role

In southern Oman, around Salalah, camels still play an important role in daily life.
They are not part of the scenery, but animals raised for specific purposes.

In the Dhofar region, camels are traditionally bred for their milk, their meat, and their economic and social value within local families.
They are also used for camel racing, a practice that remains deeply rooted in Oman, with certain camels bred and trained specifically for competition.

Dhofar is a historically pastoral region, made up of vast open landscapes where herds move freely, often without enclosures. This traditional way of life explains why camels are so commonly seen along roads, in the mountains, and sometimes even near the coast.
