First Palliative Care Workshop Successfully Completed
The first-ever Palliative Care Workshop has been successfully completed at the Lae International Hotel, Morobe Province. The workshop was organized and coordinated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in collaboration with the Morobe Provincial Health Authority (MPHA). Participants included medical and nursing staff from various departments within the MPHA.
This important training marks a significant step forward in strengthening Cancer Care and Management in the province. The MSF team, currently based in Morobe, has been working in partnership with the Provincial Health Authority to support the National Cancer Services PNG at Angau Memorial Provincial Hospital. Their focus includes cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and patient follow-up care.
In addition to providing direct clinical support, MSF is actively involved in capacity building, offering technical training and mentoring to local healthcare professionals. This helps enhance the skills and knowledge of staff involved in cancer management, ensuring sustainable improvements in patient care.
The Palliative Care Workshop specifically focused on the management of cancer patients requiring palliative support — an essential but often overlooked aspect of comprehensive cancer care. Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families by addressing pain relief, symptom management, emotional support, and dignified end-of-life care.
By equipping local healthcare workers with the necessary skills and understanding of palliative care principles, the workshop contributes to a more compassionate and holistic approach to cancer management at Angau Memorial Provincial Hospital and throughout the Morobe Province.
