FEMORAL SHAFT FRACTURE FIXATION
A femoral shaft fracture is one of the most serious fractures because the femur is the strongest and largest bone in the body. These usually happen from high-energy trauma like vehicular accidents, falls, or sports injuries.
How do we fix it?
In most adult cases, the best treatment is surgical fixation, usually through:
✅ Intramedullary nailing (metal rod inserted inside the bone canal)
✅ With locking screws to maintain alignment and stability
Why surgery is often recommended:
✔ Restores bone alignment
✔ Provides strong internal support
✔ Allows earlier mobility and rehabilitation
✔ Reduces risks of malunion, shortening, and prolonged bed rest complications
Recovery expectations:
📌 Early movement is encouraged
📌 Physical therapy is essential
📌 Weight-bearing depends on fracture stability and X-ray healing
📌 Most patients regain function with proper rehab and follow-up
If you or someone you know has a femur fracture, early consult matters — proper fixation + rehab makes all the difference in outcome.
