KALUSUGAN SA KALAGITNAAN NG PANDEMYA

Health is the greatest wealth we will ever have. Without our health, our vitality, our best energy, every part of our lives has the opportunity to suffer. Even when we don't know it.

In today's world, we have health all turned around, flipped inside out and all messed up. We live in a society that values high quantity and low quality foods, over-indulgences, not enough movement and a quick medical fix whenever something goes wrong. We're ok suffering so long as it means we don't have to change our lifestyle. We are even willing to consciously sacrifice the health of those we love and the Earth for our own indulgences.

Health goes beyond weight. It goes beyond blood pressure. It goes beyond the numbers that traditional doctors assess. Health is about physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being. They are all connected. They are all important. They are all influenced by what we allow into our lives and by what we put out into the world. And it is not just physical goods that we consume or produce. It is also the energy that we cannot see. It is the aura that exists within us and exudes out from us. We are the ones who create that aura. We are the ones who manage that energy. We are the ones who are responsible for ensuring that not only are our bodies well-nourished but also that our minds and spirits are also nurtured.

We spend so much time worried about our careers and money. About stuff and things. About where we live on the societal totem pole. In the process, we forget about our own health and well being. We de-prioritize wellness in exchange for a few extra hours in meetings or answering emails. We forget about this one body that has been entrusted to us for this one journey. We forget about our mind and that it is seeking solace and patience to keep up with an ever-evolving world. We forget to connect with and care for our souls, those energies that define us not as humans but as everlasting beings.

And yet, few of us want to actively make choices that hurt our long-term health. We are most often operating off of what has been engrained in us throughout our lives and what we hear from the world around us. We're bombarded and swayed by advertisements shared with us from "respectable" companies, organizations and the government. It is incredibly difficult to break the mold that society has built for us. Through the marketing and initiatives that profit-hungry companies and governments have created, we are often unable to filter out the best choices for our health through all the noise.

I have this innate naivety that people behind those organizations cannot possibly be intentionally pushing these messages on society. If they truly knew and understood the consequences of their choices, I believe that most of them would try to change their offerings. But the problem is that the issue has gotten so bad and so big that it's going to take a massive crumbling for our society to pivot in a new direction and for our companies to start making responsible decisions that are health-focused instead of money-hungry.

And so, we must be responsible for our own health. We must be solely accountable to our own bodies. We must take the time to research and understand what we are ingesting into our systems and what we are putting out into the world in return. It's a process. It's not a simple change. It's about learning and understanding. It's about investing time and energy. It's about leaning into our health, our well being, and truly trying to make sense of the impacts that we as individuals have on this Earth.

We must ask ourselves - is my job more important than my overall wellbeing? Is that early-morning meeting worth me not getting in my workout for the day? Does the money in the bank mean more to me than my long-term health? Am I willing to give up my healthy years for people, places and societal expectations that may not have any concern for my life?

Health is an investment. It's a long-game. We can't rely on short-term fad diets, the number on the scale, one good night's sleep, a one-week vacation or a day off from work to create a longer, healthier life. And we surely can't rely on society to tell us what's best for us. We have to do the work for ourselves. We have to learn what is best for us, as individuals. We have to consciously create small changes every day that align with our best, healthiest self. It starts with one small investment, every day. As the days go by, the health bank grows. We gain time. Not just the quantity of time...but the quality.

For we as humans survive for time, not money. We ensue for happiness, for possibility, for the FEELING of living. We may want for things and money, but we yearn for time, love and connection. And if we push ourselves into a place that we treat these bodies and this one-time journey irresponsibly, we will surely lose the chance to live fully.

So we invest every day. We choose health over a busy schedule.

Here are some tips and advice on how to strike this balance:

BE WISE ON YOUR HEALTH FINANCES

Going beyond Health is Wealth (and Vice Versa)
How can you be wiser with your finances while pursuing a healthier and more active lifestyle? There can be two ways: cook your own food and find alternative ways to work out.

Instead of going to fancy restaurants where a bowl of salad can easily fetch over P300, why not cook your own meals at home? That way you can save more money, get to know more about healthy cooking, and be in full control of what you eat. There are millions of ways to prepare healthy food at a very low budget in the internet. Just search and cook away!

Getting to the real grind of working out is also difficult, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. A regular monthly gym membership can fetch at least P3,000, but running around your neighborhood is free. There are also free yoga and dance/Zumba classes in some communities which you can join.

KNOW MORE ABOUT INSURANCE

know more about insurance
So, you’re starting to save money now, but where can you put the extra money as a wise investment? Insurance is a very good investment decision. BPI-Philam Life, for instance, has a wide array of insurance products suitable for everyone’s budget and goals in life.

One very good example is the Build Estate Plus, a unit-linked protection plan that can cover for your estate taxes—a tax levied on the net value of an estate you own after your death before distribution to your family or heirs—so your loved ones can feel that you lived beyond your lifetime. It takes away the possible financial burden that your loved ones can face once you pass on.

An advantage of the Build Estate Plus product is that it is integrated with Philam Vitality Program, which provides an upfront additional coverage of 20% to your policy and any attached add-ons. There is also an investment component to this insurance, which can grow over time, not only securing your and your loved ones’ financial future, but also grows your money.

THINK LONG-TERM (BEYOND YOURSELF)

Going beyond Health is Wealth (and Vice Versa)
It is true that health is wealth, but financial wellness is also key to total wellness in the fact that it doesn’t only secure your financial future, but it also secures your loved ones’ future once you pass on. It gives the security of knowing that you can still provide to them even after you’re gone.

Build Estate Plus provides life insurance coverage, ensuring your family continues to enjoy the wealth that you worked hard for with a life insurance benefit that they could use for estate tax. It’s also under a short-term payment scheme, on top of the investment component which provides the potential for your investment to grow.

To take the first step on living longer, healthier, and better, check out the BPI-Philam offers a health program or head to a BPI branch near you and talk to a Bancassurance Sales Executive.

THE BENEFITS OF DRINKING HERBAL TEAS

Tea is a delicious beverage that can be enjoyed iced or heated at any time of year. However, its advantages extend well beyond mere refreshment. There has been a lot of research done that shows that drinking tea will actually boost your health.

1. Tea contains antioxidants.
Antioxidants work to prevent the body’s version of rust and thus help to keep us young and protect us from damage from pollution. Load up on antioxidants with a white tea, which is less processed than black or green tea so it retains more beneficial antioxidants.

2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee.
Herbal blends have no caffeine, while traditional teas have less than 50% of what typically is found in coffee. That means you can consume it without those pesky effects on your nervous system, says Leslie Bonci, nutritionist and owner of Active Eating Advice. If you're trying to switch from coffee to tea, try a chicory root tea like Teeccino, which has a mouth feel and flavor similar to coffee. Chicory root is also known to help reduce stress and is a prebiotic so may be helpful to your gut.

3. Tea can lower your risk of having a heart attack and stroke.
In addition, a 2016 study that pooled data from several of the previous studies discovered that those who drank one to three cups of green tea per day had a nearly 20% lower risk of heart attack and a 35% lower risk of stroke.

4. Tea can aid in weight loss.
Studies that have shown an influence on weight have centered on consuming large quantities of tea, mostly in pill form.

5. Tea can aid in bone health.
Recent animal studies have revealed that green tea can help to prevent bone loss. Moringa, a South Asian plant, has long been known for its medicinal properties and is quickly becoming a popular superfood. Moringa tea contains more calcium than milk, as well as iron, vitamin A, and vitamin K, making it an excellent supplement for bone health.

6. Tea can help you keep your smile bright.
“Japanese researchers discovered that tea can reduce tooth loss,” Ardine said. “When you drink it, it shifts the pH in your mouth, which may be what prevents cavities.” In addition, unlike many other drinks, tea does not tend to erode tooth enamel, according to Bonci.

7. Tea can help to improve the immune system.
Tea has been shown in studies to tune up immune cells, allowing them to hit their targets faster. Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, Ayurvedic practitioners have used holy basil or tulsi tea for centuries to help keep the immune system intact following accidents or illnesses.

8. Tea can aid in the fight against cancer.
According to Bonci, current research on this topic is mixed, implying that more research is required. In the meantime, “if you have a good family history of cancer and you want to do something you can,” she suggests increasing your tea intake.

9. Herbal tea can be beneficial to the digestive system.
"Herbal teas, especially chamomile, may be beneficial to people with irritable bowel syndrome because it is an antispasmodic,” Bonci explained. “Ginger teas can also help with nausea.” A ginger chamomile tea will provide you with both.

Ways to look after your mental health and wellbeing
There are many simple ways to look after your mental health on a daily basis. We are all different and what works for one of us may not work for another. There are little things you can do daily which may help.

Here are some things you can try that may help to look after your mental health and wellbeing:

1. Do things with others. Spending time with family or friends, meeting new people and getting involved in activities can make a difference to how you feel.
2. Get involved in community activities, kick the footy around, go for a bike ride etc.
3. Do something creative. Activities or hobbies can keep you distracted, have a positive impact on your sense of mental health and wellbeing and can help increase your confidence and self-esteem. This could be building something, playing an instrument, gardening, art, doing a puzzle, painting, cooking, writing etc.
4. Invest time in relationships. Connecting with people and investing in good relationships are important for your mental health. Get in touch with people who you trust or feel good around. Give them a call, send them a message or organise to catch-up with them.
5. Focus on strengths. Having positive thoughts can help you feel better. Try these support tools for guidance on how to feel positive.
6. Take time out. When you relax, you give yourself permission to let go of worries for a while. Relaxing gives your mind and body time to recover from the stresses of everyday life. Try some relaxation apps to guide you on how to relax.
7. Sleep well. We cannot function properly without sleep. Sleep helps us to repair and restore our bodies and minds. Try these tips from the Sleep Health Foundation for guidance on how to get a better night’s sleep.
8. Keeping active. Your physical health plays a key role in keeping you mentally healthy. Being physically active can improve your mood and reduces stress.
9. Eat well. Nutrition and eating well can make a difference to the way you feel and in-turn may improve your mental health.
10. Mindfulness. Mindfulness can help you feel better and reduce stress. It is easy to fit into your day. You can do it one minute at a time.

07/04/2021

The COVID-19 crisis has reminded us that our economies depend on our health, and our health depends on how we work together. With the future of billions determined by decisions the G20 leaders take now, we cannot afford the costs of inaction

When the COVID-19 crisis hit, many governments dithered, or made it worse through denial, hiding information and using punitive measures in desperate efforts to stop its spread. Later, even after scientists identified effective treatments, monopolistic approaches to intellectual property held down production and left millions of people out. It took far too long for leaders to understand that our ‘hard’ economy depends on our ‘soft’ health, that the most important competition is with the virus, not each other, and that health care is an investment, not an expense. A broken global system marked by a lack of knowledge sharing, adequate public health financing and global solidarity cost millions of lives. That is what happened with AIDS; we must not let it happen again with COVID-19.

With AIDS, it was not until this century began that drug production was massively increased and prices reduced, public investment and aid for treatment and prevention shot up, and life expectancies returned to former levels. This shift was prompted partly by the moral case, emphasised by dramatic images of unnecessary suffering and partly by political pressure – but it was also driven by recognition of the huge economic cost of allowing a pandemic to spread. The impact of AIDS on productivity contributed to Africa’s lost decade. AIDS showed too that borders are insecure barriers against pandemics, and devastation left unaddressed anywhere threatens devastation everywhere.

COVID-19 is rapidly exploiting inequalities and the frailties of systems that could have protected societies. It reminds us of the lessons from AIDS: the world has not invested or organised itself to enable a robust response to epidemics. Controlling the virus and recovering from COVID-19 will depend on international cooperation. Three urgent actions stand out.

Three urgent actions

First, G20 leaders must ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine reaches everyone, free of charge at point of use, as set out in the popular call for a People’s Vaccine. G20 members need to use their leverage to demand that what is made possible with public money is shared in ways that maximise the public good. This can be achieved by sharing all knowledge, technologies and intellectual property through the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Technology Access Pool. Only mass simultaneous production using all possible manufacturing capacities across the world can ensure the levels of production needed; no monopoly producer can match that scale, however ‘generous’ its donations or deals of doses, while controlling the intellectual property and know-how. All G20 members need to support global initiatives to ensure equitable access to treatments and vaccines, such as COVAX and the WHO’s Equitable Access Framework. The economic damage across all industries from the pandemic will far exceed any gain to a tiny few from a vaccine monopoly. Vaccine nationalism is ultimately bad for every country.

Second, as the battle against COVID-19 will be won or lost on the front lines of health services, G20 leaders must lead by example by strengthening free public health care, available to everyone as a right. Now is the time to remove all financial barriers and step up public investment to ensure universal health coverage that includes publicly funded community delivered services. Strong economies are not undermined by strong public services; they are underpinned by them. A higher contribution from the wealthiest individuals and businesses through taxation is a reasonable and affordable way to protect everybody from health crises, and to protect businesses from the economic havoc that health crises wreak.

Third, G20 leaders must help give developing countries the fiscal space to invest in health, education and social protection, as former global leaders highlighted in their letter to the G20. There is an urgent need to deepen action on debt. The Jubilee Debt Campaign shows that the debt payments of developing countries are at their highest levels since 2001, with many spending more on debt than on health, education and social protection combined. G20 leaders must build on the Debt Service Suspension Initiative with a legally binding agreement that encompasses all low- and middle-income countries and all lender categories, including private and multilateral creditors as well as governments, and avoids any payments through the end of 2022. G20 leaders must also support the issuance of new special drawing rights by the International Monetary Fund to boost countries’ spending power, as was successfully done after the 2008 crisis. G20 members must confirm they will not cut international aid but will instead increase it, as none are safe until all are safe. The G20 must also act forcefully to close tax loopholes and havens to strengthen countries’ domestic revenue collection and sustainability.

Health is wealth. If our institutions are not reinforced immediately, we are destined to repeat our AIDS history, including preventable deaths, social and political instability, and huge lost economic opportunity. If leaders invest in resilient health systems now, we can beat COVID-19, finish the fight against AIDS, prevent and treat other illnesses, and prepare for future epidemics. We do eventually learn our lessons and do what is needed. The question is how fast. The costs of inaction on AIDS exceeded the costs of action. We cannot afford a repeat.

The COVID-19 crisis, awful as it is, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tackle the structural inequalities that make our societies and economies so vulnerable. The actions that G20 leaders take this year will determine the world’s recovery – the future of billions of people is being written now; so, too, are leaders’ legacies.

Health Is Wealth Essay for Students and Children

Growing up you might have heard the term ‘Health is Wealth’, but its essential meaning is still not clear to most people. Generally, people confuse good health with being free of any kind of illnesses. While it may be part of the case, it is not entirely what good health is all about. In other words, to lead a healthy life, a person must be fit and fine both physically and mentally. For instance, if you are constantly eating junk food yet you do not have any disease, it does not make you healthy. You are not consuming healthy food which naturally means you are not healthy, just surviving. Therefore, to actually live and not merely survive, you need to have the basic essentials that make up for a healthy lifestyle.

If you wish to acquire a healthy lifestyle, you will certainly have to make some changes in your life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle demands consistent habits and disciplined life. There are various good habits that you can adopt like exercising regularly which will maintain your physical fitness. It also affects your mental health as when your appearance enhances, your confidence will automatically get boosted.

Further, it will prevent obesity and help you burn out extra fat from your body. After that, a balanced diet is of great importance. When you intake appropriate amounts of nutrition, vitamins, proteins, calories and more, your immune system will strengthen. This will, in turn, help you fight off diseases powerfully resultant in a disease-free life.

Above all, cleanliness plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your balanced diet and regular exercise will be completely useless if you live in an unhealthy environment. One must always maintain cleanliness in their surroundings so as to avoid the risk of catching communicable diseases.

FACTS AND TRIVIAS

Not in the mood? Did you know that bananas can help improve your mood?

A banana has approximately 30% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 helps the brain produce serotonin, which is considered a mood stabilizer. Serotonin impacts your motor skills and emotions. It is also the chemical that helps you sleep and digest food. Eating a banana can help relieve depression and anxiety by stimulating the serotonin levels in your body.

7 Reasons Why Hot Dogs Aren’t Good For You

1) They can increase your risk for certain cancers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized processed meats, like hot dogs, as Group 1 carcinogens. What does this mean? Group 1 carcinogens are a category of substances that have the strongest evidence of being cancer-causing in people. Other things that fall into this category include to***co and asbestos.

2) They aren’t good for your heart health.

Hot dogs are high in saturated fat and sodium. Just one hot dog can contain over a quarter of your day’s sodium allowance and over 14 grams of fat.

3) They can increase your risk for type 2 diabetes.

Every hot dog you eat increases your risk of type 2 diabetes. People who eat the most processed meats have approximately a 20 to 30% higher risk of diabetes for every two-ounce serving of processed meats per day. That’s just one hot dog per day - hardly a remarkable amount.

4) They are at high risk for food recall.

Hot dogs have been recalled for many reasons. Some hot dog recalls have been due to contamination of Listeria, metal shards, and bone fragments. These kinds of contaminants may not be all that surprising given hot dogs ingredients.

5) They contain questionable ingredients.

People find very strange, gross, and even dangerous things inside their hot dogs on a pretty regular basis. And these incidents don’t always trigger national food recalls, or even make much of a news splash. Here’s a short list: rubber bands, silverfish, plastic, hair clumps, glass, razor blades, insects, buttons, and pills. There may also be other, unexpected animal parts used in the making of hot dogs. Pig snouts, animal organs, intestines, and skeletal muscle are apparently fair game.

6) They may cause allergic reactions.

Hot dogs may contain ingredients that cause some people to have an allergic reaction. This, too, isn’t really surprising given that hot dogs contain a laundry list of ingredients. Many people are allergic to the types of meat trimmings used in hot dogs, food dyes like tartrazine, or additives like nitrates and nitrites.

7) They’re usually served with other unhealthy foods.
Most of us probably aren’t eating hot dogs on a heaping plate of raw kale with a side of mixed berries.

We like our hot dogs on a heavily processed, white bun. And we top them with condiments that contain high amounts of sugar, sodium, and potentially harmful food dyes. We’ll add even more saturated fat, sugar, and sodium to our plate in the form of sides like potato chips and sugary soft drink beverages.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF BANANAS

1. Bananas are one of the best fruit sources of vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 from bananas is easily absorbed by your body and a medium-sized banana can provide about a quarter of your daily vitamin B6 needs.

2. Bananas are respectable sources of vitamin C
You may not associate bananas with vitamin C but a medium-sized banana will provide about 10% of your daily vitamin C needs.

3. Manganese in bananas is good for your skin
One medium-sized banana provides approximately 13% of your daily manganese needs. Manganese helps your body make collagen and protects your skin and other cells against free radical damage.

4. Potassium in bananas is good for your heart health and blood pressure
A medium-sized banana will provide around 320-400 mg of potassium, which meets about 10% of your daily potassium needs.

Potassium helps your body maintain a healthy heart and blood pressure. In addition, bananas are low in sodium. The low sodium and high potassium combination helps to control high blood pressure.

5. Bananas can aid digestion and help beat gastrointestinal issues
A medium banana will provide about 10-12% of your daily fibre needs. Singapore’s Health Promotion Board recommends a daily dietary fibre intake of 20g for women and 26g for men.

Soluble and insoluble fibres play an important role in your health. Soluble fibre helps your body control your blood sugar level and get rid of fatty substances such as cholesterol. Insoluble fibre adds weight and softness to stools, making it easier for you to have regular bowel movements. This helps to keep your gut healthy and safe from harmful bacteria.

6. Bananas give you energy – minus the fats and cholesterol
Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose – giving you a fat and cholesterol-free source of energy. As such, bananas are ideal, especially for children and athletes, for breakfast, as a midday snack or before and after sports.
