"A 41-year-old former OFW in Malaysia shared her breast cancer journey on Sunday in celebration of Womenβs Month.
Civil engineer May Ann Franista Quela of Lipa, Batangas was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019.
βNa-discover po ang lump sa breast ko on May 8, physical examination for my next assignment as a planning engineer. They removed my left breast. The lump was 8 cm like a size of a tennis ball,β she told The Philippine STAR.
Doctors said Quela has HER2+, a rare type of breast cancer. She underwent 22 sessions of chemotherapy that resulted to hair loss.
βMy hair slowly started growing in January 2020. Done na ako sa chemo, I had a PET scan last July 2020. No cancer cell found active in my body and another test last February, still a good result,β she said.
βMy oncologist, Dr. Wilfredo Liangco, did not declare me yet as cancer free kasi kailangan seven years na consistent ang test,β she added.
Quela admitted that apart from the pain that she went through during chemotherapy sessions, her family also struggled financially because of the treatments.
βNa-amaze ako kasi kahit ako hindi ko alam paano ko nalagpasan ang lahat ng financial troubles and physical pain. Kumapit lang talaga ako sa taas at sa pamilya ko. Sobrang lakas ng support na nakuha ko sa mga kaibigan at mga dating colleagues,β Quela said.
βFor some women who are experiencing the same or having some hard time right now, never lose hope and surrender everything to God. We women are stronger more than what we think and we can do more than what is expected from us.
