Last Saturday, March 7, 2026, another pawikan hatchlings release took place at Sitio Remedios in Currimao.
A total of 40 𝙊𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙍𝙞𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 were safely released into the ocean. But what made this moment truly wonDOERful was something we rarely witness—the people who came to watch actually outnumbered the hatchlings. Usually, it’s the other way around.
This time, 𝙣𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 100 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 (𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚) coming from different municipalities of Ilocos Norte. Families enjoyed the beach, the sunset, and the rare opportunity to witness these tiny sea turtles begin their journey to the sea.
𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙮, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙤-𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧, 𝙑𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙨 𝘼𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙮𝙠𝙖 𝙂. 𝙎𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙖𝙤𝙖𝙩, 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙘 𝙑𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨. It proved how powerful social media can be in raising awareness. Many attendees said they never realized that pawikan hatchling releases could be experienced in their own province—they thought they had to travel elsewhere.
Several visitors shared that the moment was “an experience for the books.” It inspired them to tell others about it and reminded them how important it is to protect and maintain the cleanliness of our beaches, because the survival of these magnificent creatures depends on it.
Some of our DOERs Ilocos Norte members were also present to help manage the activity. Special thanks to Nova and Czarine, who helped marshall the crowd and ensure the hatchlings’ safe journey to the sea.
