Stimming can look a lot of different ways and it is a GOOD thing because it helps a person regulate their body!

Autism awareness month is over but that does NOT mean we stop spreading awareness and acceptance!SHARE this post if you agree!

➡️ Autism is a combination of traits and not just one or two things. However- it’s generally pretty different than most people think and the way differences can present across areas is huge! For example-

1️⃣ Differences in language can range from non-speaking to having a very strong, formal, and fluent vocabulary.
2️⃣ Differences in socialization can range from a preference to be alone to excessively speaking to others and requiring an intense amount of others’ attention
3️⃣ One Autistic person may have very strong need for routine while another may not, one may have very intense and clear focused interest, while other Autistic people may have more age typical interests that aren’t. clearly different.
4️⃣ Some Autistic people may be sensory avoidant and dislike sounds, crowds, many foods, etc - while another seeks input with eating spicy foods, chewing on their shirt, rocking back and forth, and appearing hyperactive in their sensory seeking behaviors.

The truth is- most Autistic people are a mix of these and will identify with some, but not all of these listed characteristics. Follow me for more info on Autism! And let me know if you have any questions!

If your child is in speech - skip this post- it’s not relevant 😘

Milestones can be so helpful for parents to know when a speech and language evaluation is needed but these are NOT the end all- be all. Many kids can meet milestones and need speech therapy while others may be behind on milestones but not need speech therapy.

But I am soooooo pro evaluation and early intervention that I think these are helpful to many! Once a child is getting support - meeting milestones may be a goal but is also may not be the goal. And getting an evaluation and determining a need to speech support is SO MUCH more than a simple list of skills. So- if your child isn’t quite meeting these, I recommend an evaluation. If your child IS meeting these but anyone thinks an evaluation is needed, I recommend an evaluation!

There are some early warning signs we might see in the preschooler who struggles with crossing their midline. When we see a difficulty with the integrated motor patterns, this can be an indicator for various challenges.

🚩Some of the ways that difficulties with preschool crossing midline will present as:

>>Having difficulty with age-appropriate self-care tasks like dressing or grooming activities
