SUBJECT: Authority to Decide on Suspension of Classes or Shift to Modular Learning Due to Rise in Cases of Influenza-Like Illnesses in Schools

DATE: October 22, 2025

Due to the rising cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) in schools in neighboring Naga City, the Municipal Government, anticipating the possible increase in ILI cases in schools in the municipality, is giving the Department of Education and the heads of public schools the authority to decide whether to suspend classes or shift temporarily to modular learning based on their situation, subject to the DepEd’s protocols and each school’s established guidelines on class suspension and learning continuity.

ILIs are contagious illnesses caused by several different viruses or bacteria that cause infections in the nose, throat, or lungs. Common symptoms include fever (at least 38Β°C), coughs that span 10 days, swollen throat, runny nose, headache, chills, body pain, weakness or low energy, vomiting, and diarrhea. Individuals who show symptoms must be advised to remain at home and refrain from interacting with other people, take medicine to manage the fever, ensure proper rest, drink enough water, and eat healthy, nutritious food.

School authorities are entrusted to exercise sound judgment and discretion in assessing their individual situations and implementing appropriate measures to safeguard the health and well-being of students, teachers, and school personnel.

For guidance and immediate implementation.

DIANO L. BARDALOZA, JR.
