The concept of the Mental Health Kit came from the idea of first aid kits. Like, "What do you need when you have a cut, burn, or a little emergency?" Or "What can you use to help someone out with their little emergency?" but for mental health concerns like anxiety, feeling overwhelmed.
While the kit can be personalized according to the specific needs of the person, this basic one was conceptualized and validated by psychology practitioners, group facilitators, occupational therapists, and an expressive arts facilitator.
We focused on sensorial experiences, expressive opportunities, grounding and stabilization, varied regulating activities, and for it to be used with a partner or with a group for fun!
These kits provide accessible, simple, age and culturally-sensitive tools that:
✨️Promote self-regulation (calming the body and mind)
✨️Encourage expression of emotions through play and art
✨️Build resilience and hope in the face of uncertainty
✨️Offer comfort and familiarity in a disrupted environment
Of course, there's a guide zine and an affirmation card inside.
Also, in the guide, we put a disclaimer that is kit does not serve as a professional intervention and that "if symptoms persist, please go to the nearest licensed mental health practitioner".
The purpose of each item is in the comments section.
I can't thank the donors, volunteers, and sharers enough that we made this thing happened. 🥹😍
