Our fraternity’s intent has always been to promote brotherhood, moral development, and service to the community. It is never our desire to cause division or difficulty for anyone of faith. We understand that what may be meant as a gesture of goodwill can sometimes have unintended consequences, and we respect the processes by which religious communities address such matters.
One important point often overlooked is that Freemasonry does not admit atheists — belief in a Supreme Being is fundamental to becoming a Mason. At the same time, we welcome men of different faith traditions (e.g. Catholics, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc.). In that sense, our Lodges are like schools or institutions that accept different beliefs, all learning and growing together.
We hope that this incident can someday lead to greater understanding between institutions, and that all parties find a path marked by mutual respect and peace. Freemasonry continues to uphold its commitment to charity, truth, and service — values we believe are shared by many, regardless of creed.
In the spirit of harmony, we extend our fraternal goodwill to the brethren of Ormoc, to the Catholic faithful, and to all members of our wider community.
The Order of the Discalced Augustinians (OAD) has suspended Fr. Libby Daños, OAD, from public ministry after he participated in the blessing of a Masonic marker in Ormoc City, an act deemed contrary to Catholic doctrine. The Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentino (OAD Asia) confirmed on Monday that Fr. Daños was relieved of his duties pending a canonical investigation.
In its statement, the OAD said the priest expressed deep remorse and is cooperating with the inquiry under Church law and the order’s constitutions. The incident, which circulated on social media, drew criticism from Catholics who raised concern over a priest’s involvement in a Masonic ceremony. The order stressed that the action caused scandal among the faithful and contradicted the Church’s clear teaching on Freemasonry.
The OAD noted that it remains committed to upholding Church doctrine and accountability among its members, adding that formation programs are being strengthened to prevent similar incidents. Fr. Daños, who has served in Asia for nearly three decades, remains suspended as the investigation continues.
