Every 31st of May, the World Health Organization and its global partners, which includes the Philippines, celebrate the World No To***co Day. This year, the focus of the celebration is on "To***co and Lung Health."

To***co endangers the lung health of its users and everyone around these users through second-hand smoking. Among the diseases that it may cause or exacerbate are:

1. LUNG CANCER
2. ASTHMA
3. COPD
4. TUBERCULOSIS

In addition, smoking also causes outdoor and indoor POLLUTION which also affects the health of the community. Pregnant women exposed to smoke will give birth to infants with REDUCED lung growth and function; while children exposed to smoke will have HIGHER RISK to develop lung diseases in adulthood.

As such, the MOST EFFECTIVE measure to improve lung health is to reduce and stop to***co use, and reduce second-hand smoke exposure.

STOP SMOKING NOW. REMEMBER YOUR LOVED ONES.

CHOOSE HEALTH, NOT TO***CO.
Talk to your physicians or pharmacists for options on how to stop smoking.

PharmaCEASE apprises future pharmacists at PPS7

Philippine Pharmacy Summit (PPS) 7, a pioneer project of the University of the Philippines Pharmaceutical Association (UPPhA) featured advocacy groups of the Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPhA), including the PharmaCEASE Smoking Cessation Advocacy, last February 17 at the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) College of Pharmacy.

In collaboration with DLSMHSI, this year’s summit is focused on the unifying theme, “Unbound x Unfazed: Unclasping the Stereotypical Chains and Head-On Tackling the Different Societal Issues Faced by a Filipino Pharmacist,” which is aimed at equipping pharmacists and student pharmacists to become advocates of professional and personal excellence. Event topics covered the regulatory landscape in the Philippines, pharmacovigilance and its implementation, drug abuse epidemic, and research efforts being done in the country.

For the parallel session, PharmaCEASE Co-Chairperson, Diana Dalisay Orolfo, RPh presented “Introductory Course: Pharmacy-based Smoking Cessation” which gave an overview on how to deal with patients who wants to quit smoking. The rest of the parallel sessions also featured representatives from the RPh for Mental Health, Disaster Management and Antimicrobial Stewardship advocacies.

Thank you, Philippine Pharmacy Summit for serving as platform for us to further our advocacy to our future colleagues!

To***co hurts you and those around you. Say no to to***co!

There is no moderation when it comes to to***co use.

To***co smoking has both health and non-health related impacts to you and those around you.

There are more than 4000 chemicals in to***co smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancer. Here are some of the chemicals contained in to***co smoke.

---------------------------

(English translation)
CVD is a group of diseases (i.e. Atherosclerosis, Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke, etc.) linked with each other that involve the heart and the blood vessels. It is proven to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it kills more people than any other cause of death worldwide. What is alarming is that 17% of these deaths are due to to***co use and second-hand smoke exposure; this makes smoking the second leading cause of CVD.

This year, the WHO intensified its campaign on the effects of smoking on CVD. Let us be one with the call to reduce and eventually stop smoking as it is the leading cause of preventable deaths. Let us increase our knowledge for us to spread awareness on the matter, and support the people that we know who are willing to quit. With this, we hope to totally cease smoking.

PharmaCEASE joins JPPhA-Beta Chapter for annual symposium

The event convened students and faculty from CEU, and is held annually to give updates on the latest advancements and current issues involving the pharmacy profession. In line with this year’s theme, the JPPhA-Beta Chapter recognized the Philippine Pharmacist Association’s (PPhA) initiatives, which include the smoking cessation advocacy through PharmaCEASE, the pioneer in promoting pharmacy-based smoking cessation campaign in the Philippines.

Also invited as guest speaker is PPhA’s Medication Adherence Advocacy Chairperson, Frances Lois Ngo, RPh. The advocacy groups seek to continue empowering students and professionals to move towards better health outcomes.
