Pickleball is Life! 😅❤️

Pickleball one of the fastest-growing sports today. More and more people are jumping into pick-up games and hitting the courts every single day.

But with the rapid growth of the sport comes an increase in injuries.

The top three injuries we commonly see in pickleball players are:
• Wrist pain
• Elbow pain
• Knee pain

Today, we’re focusing on elbow pain — commonly known as tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis.

Why pickleball players develop lateral epicondylitis:

1. Repetitive Wrist Extension
During backhands and quick reaction volleys, players repeatedly extend their wrist to stabilize the paddle.

2. Hitting Late or Off-Center
When players make contact outside the paddle’s sweet spot or hit the ball late, vibration increases.
That vibration travels up the arm and increases stress at the elbow. Repeated vibration and strain overload the tendon over time.
This is especially common in beginners, fatigued players, or those transitioning from tennis.

3. Overgripping the Paddle
Many players “death grip” the paddle during rallies.
Excessive gripping keeps the forearm extensor muscles constantly activated, increasing tendon load and accelerating overuse injury.

4. Sudden Increase in Playing Volume
New players often go from not playing at all to playing four or five days a week.
Tendons adapt more slowly than muscles. A rapid increase in load can overwhelm the tendon before it has time to strengthen and adapt.
This is one of the most common contributors to tennis elbow in pickleball.

5. Poor Backhand Mechanics
Common technical errors include:
• Excessive wrist flicking
• Leading excessively with the elbow
• Not using shoulder and trunk rotation

When players rely too heavily on the forearm instead of using the full kinetic chain, the elbow absorbs more force and becomes overloaded.
