𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘤 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘐𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘴 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦 — Mr. Lemuel Ray T. Balloyan, a Research Staff of the Center, participated in the Bioinformatics Workshop for Mass Spectrometry (MS)-based Metabolomics Annotation, scheduled on February 9–11, 2026 at De La Salle University, Laguna Campus.

Mr. Balloyan was chosen based on the merit of his research background and his potential to contribute to the advancement of metabolomics in the region. The workshop is an international initiative organized by the University of Antwerp, Ghent University, the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), and De La Salle University, in collaboration with the Philippine Metabolomics Network (PMN). The event is funded by the VLIR-UOS (Belgium).

As part of the program, participants were required to deliver a presentation showcasing their previous, ongoing, or planned metabolomics-related research. Mr. Balloyan represented MMSU and shared his work with fellow researchers and experts in the field.

The training aimed to enhance participants’ skills in metabolomics data analysis and annotation using advanced bioinformatics tools. It also provides a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and capacity building among researchers across institutions.

The Center continues to strengthen its presence in scientific fields through the active participation of its researchers in national and international trainings and collaborations.

𝙁𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙮 6, 2026 | 𝙇𝙖𝙤𝙖𝙜 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 — Dr. Mayla Veronica Madrigal, Dr. Peter James Icalia-Gann, and Ms. Marvielyn P. Olivar conducted an official research visit to the Laoag City Jail, to carry out interviews for an ongoing study entitled “𝘈 𝘔𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘥-𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴.”

The activity was conducted with the assistance and coordination of JSINSP Sheila Marie D. Sapaden, Acting Jail Warden of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Laoag City. The visit forms part of the study’s data collection phase, aiming to generate evidence-based insights to support public health interventions for tuberculosis prevention and control in correctional settings.

𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘤 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘐𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘴 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦 | 03 𝘍𝘦𝘣 2026 — The Center officially welcomes five interns from the Bachelor of Science in Biology program of the university who will undertake a 150-hour internship designed to provide intensive, hands-on research training in microbiology and molecular biology.

Throughout the internship, the students will be deployed across the Center’s three core laboratory facilities: the Medical Microbiology Laboratory, Genomics and Genetic Engineering Laboratory, and the Cell Culture and Pharmacology Laboratory. Under the guidance of research staff, the interns will participate in ongoing projects aligned with the Center’s research priorities.

Their work will cover a broad range of topics, including:

The Center welcomes Mr. Mc Harold V. Peña, a DOST–Career Incentive Program (CIP) Fellow, who will be deployed for two consecutive years to support the Center’s CHED- and DOST-funded research projects.

Through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mr. Peña’s deployment is part of the Career Incentive Program (CIP)—a national initiative designed to strengthen the country’s science and technology (S&T) capability while providing meaningful research placements for DOST scholar-graduates.

We look forward to his valuable contributions in advancing research, innovation, and evidence-based solutions aligned with national development goals.

Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) hosted officials from the Department of Agriculture–Livestock Biotechnology Center (DA-LBC) to discuss potential cooperative research initiatives in bio-based technologies and related scientific fields.

The delegation was spearheaded by DA-LBC Chief Marvin Villanueva and DA Livestock Program Director Dr. Claro Mingala. Discussions centered on exploring collaborative research opportunities in molecular biology, biotechnology, and animal science with the Center Chief, Dr. Peter James Icalia-Gann and Director Joel Cabading of Philippine Carabao Center of MMSU, with the goal of advancing research that supports sustainable livestock and agricultural development. Dr. Villanueva also paid a visit to the different laboratory facilities of the Center.

The visit underscored the shared commitment of MMSU and the Department of Agriculture to promote innovation, capacity building, and translational research through inter-agency collaboration.

Dr. Mee Jay Domingo, Vice President for Planning and Strategic Foresight, represented the MMSU University President, Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr, and formally welcomed the DA delegation, highlighting the university’s openness to strategic partnerships that align with national research and development priorities.

Both institutions expressed optimism about future joint research undertakings and the potential impact of collaborative efforts in advancing bio-based technologies for the livestock and agriculture sectors.
