The Origin Story of Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic

Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic was born out of the conviction of a young, visionary entrepreneur, Mr. Jack Tanaleon, that health is the greatest wealth and, therefore, high quality products and services should be accessible to people, particularly those who are marginalized economically and geographically.

The business model of Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic is simple yet relevant and practical: the pharmacy, which sells affordable medicines and other related products, is integrated into the branch medical clinic, operated by professional licensed doctors for the convenience and satisfying experience of patients and their families.

The interior of a Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic is designed with the comfort of the clients in mind, and thus includes a convenience store, where non-pharmaceutical but healthy products such as food are available.

In its social dimension, Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic takes cognizance of the fact that six (6) out of 10 Filipinos or 60% of the Philippine population die without ever seeing a doctor (PSGIM, 2016). Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic also takes very seriously the observation that, on average, only 7 doctors attend to the needs of around 10,000 people in the country.

In response, Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic aims to encourage doctors and allied health professionals to practice and serve people in their own communities by offering them an opportunity to own and manage their own revenue generating clinic. Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic is rising to the challenge of bringing health services closer to the people and seeks to establish a presence in chartered and component cities, capital towns and first and second class municipalities across the country.

This value adding enterprise in the health services sector traces its roots to Guimhealth Pharmaceutical Distributors, which was established in Jordan, Guimaras on July 8, 2006 by Jack Tanaleon, then a 22-year-old entrepreneur. The company has been named Guimhealth because the owner-manager resides in the island-province of Guimaras and the line of business is health-related.

Mr. Tanaleon started with a low start-up capital in the amount of Php 24,000 only but with high hopes that his investment in drugs distribution and drugstore would grow significantly in the subsequent years.

In 2012, seven years after the opening of Guimhealth, Mr. Tanaleon thought of opening a doctor’s clinic right beside the Guimhealth drugstore. This move proved helpful and productive in the operations of Guimhealth as whole.

On its tenth year of operation, Guimhealth embarked on the creation of its own brand in the pharmaceutical industry through toll manufacturing. The results of this strategic move were encouraging. Currently, Guimhealth has applied for 127 brands covering medicines, food items and medical supplies. Some of these applications have already been approved and the products are already available in the market.

The successes of Guimhealth have inspired Mr. Tanaleon to widen his horizon and look at the big picture. On its thirteenth year, Guimhealth is poised to conquer wider market space in the healthcare services sector by reviving and further enhancing the successful and full of potential pharmacy-cum-clinic venture in Guimaras under the Doctor Jack Pharmacy and Clinic brand. This game changing business idea will propel Guimhealth to greater heights of success through franchising.
