The IRHโ€“GDM 2 Project Implementation Review (PIR) was successfully concluded, marking a meaningful milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen the management of hyperglycemia in pregnancy through nutrition education and services.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all partners, implementers, speakers, panelists, moderator, and participants whose active engagement and collaboration made the review both productive and impactful. With strong attendance, a well-paced program, and rich discussions throughout the day, the PIR provided a valuable space to reflect on implementation experiences, share key findings, and identify pathways forward.

Important project outcomes were highlighted, including progress in guidelines development, positive reception of the statistics and e-referral components, and encouraging preliminary endline survey and cost-effectiveness results. Beyond the technical discussions, what truly stood out was the spirit of camaraderie, shared learning, and partnership that defined the event.

The event also featured the launch of the GDM 2 publication, which serves as a practical resource and blueprint for implementersโ€”capturing lessons learned, evidence, and insights from the GDM 1 and GDM 2 project journey.

Today, we had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Daisylyn Alvarez, City Councilor of Dasmariรฑas, together with our field officer and site monitor at Dasmariรฑas City Hall.

We are grateful for her openness to evidence-based policymaking and her commitment to strengthening local support for mothers. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Daisy to our upcoming Project Implementation Review, as we continue working together to translate data, research, and lived experiences into meaningful action at the local level.

Building on the spirit of reflection and shared learning from our recent GDM postpartum session, yesterday our site monitors conducted two focus group discussions in Dasmariรฑas, Cavite, bringing together 13 mothers diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes.

The group included mothers who are already postpartum as well as those who are still pregnant and currently under monitoring by their LGUs and IRH site monitors. In small, supportive circles, mothers shared their experiences, challenges, and best practicesโ€”from managing blood sugar and self-care, to preparing for childbirth and life after pregnancy. These conversations created a safe space for listening, encouragement, and mutual learningโ€”reminding us that empowerment grows stronger when mothers learn from one another.

Maria is in her late 20s and entered pregnancy overweight.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase insulin resistance, making blood sugar harder to controlโ€”even when a mother is trying her best. GDM is influenced by pregnancy hormones, not just weight.

Liza is 36 and pregnant with her second child. She has no previous health problems and lives an active lifestyle. Still, maternal age alone increases the risk of developing GDM. Healthy mothers can still develop GDM.

Ana is in her early 30s and has a parent with Type 2 diabetes.
Genetics can affect how the body processes sugar, and pregnancy can uncover this risk. Family history matters.

Joy is in her mid-20s, normal weight, active, and with no family history of diabetes. Yet she was still diagnosed with GDM during routine screening. GDM can affect any pregnant woman.

The Mental Load of a High-Risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy carries an invisible weight that goes far beyond medical charts and clinic visits. It lives in the quiet momentsโ€”counting meals, remembering numbers, worrying over every choice, and constantly asking if what youโ€™re doing is enough for your baby. For many mothers, especially those managing conditions like gestational diabetes, the mind rarely rests. Even in stillness, there is planning, vigilance, and a deep sense of responsibility that never clocks out.

This mental load is real, and it deserves to be seen. Strength does not mean silence, and love does not mean carrying everything alone. Mothers in high-risk pregnancies need understanding, patience, and support just as much as they need medical care. By acknowledging the emotional labor behind the journey, we make space for compassionโ€”for mothers to breathe, to rest, and to feel held. Caring for mothersโ€™ mental health is not optional; it is essential to caring for life itself.

For moms with GDM and other high-risk conditions, mental health matters just as much as physical care.

๐Ÿค We see you.
๐Ÿค We support you.

After experiencing Gestational Diabetes (GDM), some mothers may face a higher risk of GDM in future pregnancies, postpartum diabetes, and even cardiovascular disease later in life.

These risks do not mean complications will happen โ€” but they do remind us why postpartum follow-up and long-term care matter.

With proper monitoring, healthy habits, and continued support, mothers can take steps to protect their health well beyond pregnancy.

At Institute for Reproductive Health Philippines, we believe that care after GDM is about prevention, awareness, and support โ€” so mothers can stay healthy for themselves and their families.

When Daisy was four months pregnant, she was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes (GDM). Like many mothers, she felt afraid โ€” worried about her baby, her own health, and the added challenge of managing hypertension during pregnancy.

Through guidance from her doctors and IRH-GDM1 Project, Daisy learned how to manage her condition through proper diet, regular exercise, home blood sugar monitoring, and consistent check-ups.

The journey was not easy.
There were moments of sacrifice โ€” giving up certain foods, enduring the discomfort of blood sugar monitoring, and staying disciplined even when it felt overwhelming. But with the support of her family and the GDM project team, she chose to continue.

In the end, Daisy safely delivered a healthy baby, a moment she attributes to the care, guidance, and constant support she received throughout her pregnancy.

Her story reminds us that with the right support, information, and commitment, mothers with GDM can protect their health and their babiesโ€™ lives.
