As a psychologist, I would like to gently address the statement that today’s youth are “weak” and that “depression was not common before….
It is important to understand that depression is not a trend, a fashion, or a sign of weakness. It is a serious mental health condition that involves deep emotional pain, persistent hopelessness, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty functioning, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm. For those who truly experience it, the suffering is profound and often invisible. It takes strength not weakness to wake up each day while carrying that weight.
At the same time, we must also acknowledge that mental health terms are sometimes used loosely in everyday language. When words like “depressed” are used casually to describe temporary sadness or disappointment, the true gravity of clinical depression can become misunderstood or minimized.
This is why psychoeducation is essential. We need more conversations grounded in science, empathy, and understanding. Previous generations may not have openly discussed depression not because it did not exist, but because stigma often silenced it. Today, increased awareness allows people to speak up and seek help.
Mental health awareness is not about labeling a generation. It is about recognizing real suffering, using language responsibly, and building a society that responds with compassion rather than judgment.
Strength is not the absence of emotion. Strength is the courage to face it and to ask for help when needed. 🙏🕉️💜
