What are Ketoanalogues?

are nitrogen-free analogs of essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. These play an integral role of building and repairing of body tissues, in the formation and function of enzymes, food digestion, hormone regulation among others.*

How are ketoanalogues different from amino acids?

Ketoanalogues are part-amino acid except that these don’t have the nitrogen subunit. This nitrogen can build-up in the body and cause oxidative stress in the kidneys.**

Are these related to ketogenic diet?

No. The keto fad diet talks about the process of ketosis. Ketosis is when your body uses fat instead of carbohydrates for your metabolism.**

What is its significance?

The use of ketoanalogues in association with a low or very low protein dietary intake allows a considerable reduction in the protein intake which then decreases glomerular hyperfiltration which halts the progression of renal failure and improves its prognosis.***

Ketoanalogues when added with low protein diet decreases the risk for long-term dialysis by 46%, and reduces the risk to develop advanced stage of by 51%.****

Mechanism of Action:

Ketoanalogues remove the nitrogen subunit from non-essential amino acids, thereby decreasing the formation of urea. Therefore, halting the progress of renal decline.*****

Side Effects:

Hypercalcemia (increased serum calcium in blood) may develop. It is recommended to decrease vitamin D intake while taking this supplement.*****
