Next week, we put the spotlight on our digestive system as we celebrate the Philippine Digestive Health Week!💚

This annual event aims to raise awareness on digestive health and its importance for our overall well-being as it plays a major role - transporting nutrients all-over our body.

On the other hand, the most common related diseases in our country include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).⚠️

So, how do you keep your digestive system healthy? Eat a balanced diet rich in fiber such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Increase fluid intake by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. And don't forget to include regular exercise, as it aids in digestion. And lastly, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Don't hesitate to visit a gastroenterologist on a regular basis, or when needed.👍

Have you heard about Fatty Liver? 💚

As much as it sounds weird for the layman, it is actually a common, but often silent condition where excess fat (beyond 5%) accumulates in the liver area.

A causes the liver cells to get inflammed, with potential scarring (fibrosis), and if untreated, can lead to liver failure or cirrhosis.😢

This is primarily caused by metabolic non-alcoholic issues. Otherwise, through heavy alcohol consumption.🍷🍸

Patients afflicted with rare diseases often have their quality of life reduced to taking medications, check-ups and suffering from pain.💚

In the Philippines, a disease is considered rare when it affects one patient in every 20,000 population. ⚠️ The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a rare disease as an often-debilitating disease or condition with a prevalence of 0.65% to 1%.

We close the short month of February with a spotlight on the National to raise awareness of the over 7,000 rare diseases that impact over 300 million people globally.🩺

At the end of the day, our lifestyle has the biggest impact on our high blood pressure.💚

So we conclude our infographic series "Contributing Causes of Hypertension" with a spotlight on related activities.

✅ #05 of 06 - STRESS
*************************

Stress has always been known to be a major contributor to a number of unfavorable medical conditions, and hypertension is no exemption.

Being a common disease, is often overlooked. But perhaps, we'll think twice if we knew it just as deadly. This risk and its variety of conditions make it a major challenge in the medical world. 👩‍⚕️

**************************************
✅ #06 of 06 - UNHEALTHY HABITS
**************************************

Unhealthy lifestyle choices can be a combination of risk factors which may be responsible for this phenomenon includes the following:

👎 Too Much Salt Intake
👎 Caffeine
👎 Alcohol
👎 Cigarette

When you eat too much salt (sodium), your body can hold extra water leading to an unfavorable medical scenario called 'water retention'. On the other hand, caffeine and alcohol should only be taken only in moderation, if ever needed.

Furthermore, ci******es, containing ni****ne, causes blood vessels to constrict and reduces blood flow to your organs. Add to that a poor diet and irregular sleeping patterns can take a toll on an individual’s body, over a period of time.⚠️

The variety of contributing causes of hypertension make it a major challenge in the medical world. 💚

Although there is no single theory that states the pathogenesis of primary , several mechanisms that may contribute to the occurrence have been identified as we continue our infographic series "Contributing Causes of Hypertension"

***************************
✅ #03 of 06 - HEREDITY
***************************

Sadly beyond our personal control, some individuals are at higher risks of developing hypertension than others. This is because they are genetically more prone to increased blood pressure, owing to genetic abnormalities or mutations inherited from their families.

The nature of hypertension links genetics to playing an important role in the pathogenesis of primary hypertension.

***************************
✅ #04 of 06 - OBESITY
***************************

On the other hand, this one is within our control - something we can do something about.

Obesity is a big risk factor for the development of due to the factors of body weight and the amount of intra-abdominal and intra-vascular fat or cholesterol in the body.⚠️

This condition puts individuals at one of the highest risks of developing hypertension than others.

Being overweight means your heart has to work harder in pumping blood into the different organs and systems of your body. ❤️‍🩹 Those extra efforts can put a strain on your arteries, which in turn, resist this flow of blood, leading for your blood pressure to rise

We know that alcohol as a vice is bad for our health, but are you aware that it is specifically a risk factor to hypertension? 💚

A cause for high blood pressure, frequent drinking of alcohol can cause arteries to tighten and constrict that can lead to hypertension. Over time, high blood pressure puts strain on the heart and can cause heart attack. It is never too late to start changing your lifestyle towards a healthier heart.🍷🍸

Drinking less alcohol also reduces your risk of a wide range of health conditions.👍
