Your Nose Knows: The Secret Superpower for Your Health!

Did you know your sense of smell is a direct line to your well-being? It's more than just detecting scents—it's a critical signaling system. This is especially true for women, who possess greater neural olfactory density than men, giving them an enhanced ability to perceive and process scents!

Bronchopneumonia is a type of lung infection that causes inflammation and small areas of pus in the airways and surrounding lung tissue. It is caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections and is particularly harmful to children under age five. A case study reported the effects of steam inhalation using eucalyptus EO a child aged 4.5 years old hospitalized for bronchopneumonia. Steam inhalation of eucalyptus EO was performed one to two times daily for 10 to 15 minutes each session. After performing the steam inhalation three times during a 24-hour period the child experienced significant improvements: reduced cough frequency, improved expulsion of airway mucus, and overall better airway clearance.

Please note that eucalyptus EO should be used very cautiously with children aged 3-5, and it is generally recommended to use milder oils for children under 3, such as lemon and frankincense. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementia and the number of people living with it is expected to triple by 2050. The progressive memory loss and behavioral changes over years is a painful process for those with AD and their families and caregivers.

A randomized controlled clinical trial investigated the effects (sleep quality, neuropsychiatric behavioral disorders, quality of life, and biochemical measures) of aromatherapy for people with AD. Six drops of a blend of lavender, sweet orange, and bergamot essential oils (2 drops of each) were added to 200 mL of water in a diffuser, which was operated every night at 9:00pm for 1 hour over a 12-week period. The control group inhaled from a diffuser with water only. Inhaling the essential oil blend improved sleep quality, alleviated psychobehavioral symptoms, and improved overall quality of life. Biochemical evaluation also showed a decrease in oxidative stress (by increasing superoxide dismutase levels) and inflammation (decreased TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels). The biochemical results are noteworthy because oxidative stress and inflammation are linked to further deterioration of AD.

Neuropathic pain is one of the most challenging pains to manage clinically and few viable options exist in Western medicine. A comprehensive review of clinically proven natural solutions for neuropathic pain highlighted the benefits of essential oils like lavender, rose, and ginger essential oil, and blends containing lavender, clary sage, rose, ginger, geranium essential oil for neuropathic pain.

In my experience, blends tend to be most effective and other oils I have found effective include peppermint, fir oils, copaiba, frankincense, vetiver, wintergreen, camphor, helichrysum, copaiba, geranium, turmeric, and spruce. For long-term use, dilute the blend to 10%-15%. The blend can be diluted to 25%-50% for short-term use.

A quasi-experimental clinical study explored the effects of baby massage combined with lavender aromatherapy on improving infant sleep quality. The research involved 30 infants aged 3 to 12 months who met specific health and sleep disturbance criteria. Over the course of the intervention, trained professionals performed 15-minute massages using a gentle sequence (including the feet, abdomen, chest, face, hands, and back) while simultaneously diffusing lavender essential oil—3 to 5 drops in 100 mL of water using a humidifier. The results were compelling. Prior to the intervention, 60% of infants exhibited poor sleep quality. Following the massage and aromatherapy treatments, 73.3% showed significant improvements in sleep duration, reduced nighttime awakenings, and greater alertness upon waking. Statistical analysis confirmed the effectiveness, with sleep quality scores rising from a pre-intervention average of 36.7% to 77.8% post-intervention. These findings affirm that combining touch therapy with the lavender diffusion naturally enhances melatonin production and relaxes the nervous system—supporting healthier sleep cycles in infants.

8 practical tips for using Oregano
1. From the Greeks
The oregano plant is thought to have been found in the mountainsides of Greece, Italy, and the Mediterranean. In fact, Greek legend tells that the goddess Aphrodite grew aromatic oregano in the gardens of Mount Olympus to harbor joy. Today it is a worldwide herb that can be found in spicy Indian curries, flavorful Mexican enchiladas, and so much more.
2. To your home
Oregano can grow up to 30 inches tall and produces purple flowers. Once the plant is harvested, Oregano essential oil is produced by steam distilling the leaves. The result is a potent essential oil that has a warm, herbaceous scent.
3. Not your average oil

A double-blind, randomized clinical trial found that inhalation of peppermint essential oil reduced pain and improved sleep quality in people who had undergone open-heart surgery. Participants in the intervention group received seven sessions of peppermint oil inhalation—0.1 mL of 10% dilution in 10 mL of distilled water infused in a nebulizer or ventilator—beginning prior to surgery and continuing until the end of the second day after surgery. The placebo group received distilled water only.
