There is a beautiful stillness in starting the year with the Queen of Peace. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, reminds us that before Jesus was a teacher or a healer, He was a son.

Today we honor the Theotokos, the God-bearer, who nurtured the Light of the World. May her intercession bring a sense of calm to our busy lives and guide our steps closer to her Son in every month to come. Wishing you all a blessed feast day and a grace-filled New Year.

The Solemnity of Christ the King, typically observed on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, is a profound recognition of Jesus Christ's universal and eternal dominion. This celebration invites us to reflect deeply on His kingship, which is not one of earthly power or military might, but of selfless service, truth, justice, and love, culminating in His sacrificial act on the cross. It is a time to renew our commitment to living according to the Gospel, thereby establishing His kingdom in our own hearts and in the world around us as we anticipate His glorious return.

St. Albert the Great (c. 1200–1280), also known as Albertus Magnus, was a German Dominican friar, philosopher, theologian, and bishop who is widely considered one of the most important and influential figures of the 13th century. He earned the title "the Great" for his extraordinary breadth of knowledge and his efforts to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with Christian doctrine, a project that profoundly influenced subsequent scholastic thought, particularly through his most famous student, Thomas Aquinas. A true polymath, Albert wrote extensively on nearly every subject studied at the time, including logic, theology, botany, geography, astronomy, and chemistry, making original contributions to natural science that were remarkable for his era. Recognized for his intellectual achievements and spiritual depth, he was canonized as a saint in 1931 and is honored as a Doctor of the Church and the patron saint of scientists and naturalists.

“To dedicate or consecrate” a place to God is a ritual that is found in every religion. To “reserve” a place to God is an act of recognizing His glory and honor.

When the Emperor Constantine granted full liberty to Christians in 313, they did not spare in order to construct places for the Lord – numerous are the churches constructed at that time. Constantine himself also constructed churches, one of which he was a magnificent basilica on the Caelian Hill in Rome, over the ancient Lateran Palace, which Pope Sylvester I dedicated to Christ the Savior (318 or 324). A chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was built inside it which served as the baptistry. This moved Pope Sergius III to dedicate it to Saint John the Baptist as well. Lastly, Pope Lucius II also dedicated it to Saint John the Evangelist in the 12th century. Thus, the name of this Papal Basilica is the Basilica of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist in the Lateran. Christians consider the Basilica to be the mother church of all churches in the world.

The church was destroyed several times in the course of the centuries, and always rebuilt. The final reconstruction took place under the pontificate of Benedict XIII. The church was rededicated in 1724. It was at that time that the feast celebrated today was established and extended to the universal Church.
