When you run, the way your foot strikes the ground has a big impact on your performance, comfort, and risk of injury. This natural motion is called pronation—the inward roll of your foot as it lands to help absorb shock and distribute weight. But not everyone’s pronation is the same, and understanding your stride can make a big difference in your running journey.

Neutral Pronation (Normal)
This is considered the most efficient stride. Your foot lands on the outside of the heel and rolls inward slightly to distribute the impact evenly across the foot. Neutral pronation reduces stress on joints and muscles and allows for an efficient push-off. Runners with neutral pronation typically experience fewer injuries and have more flexibility in their choice of running shoes.

Overpronation
In this case, the foot rolls too far inward after landing. This can place extra strain on the inner foot, ankle, and knee, potentially leading to common running injuries such as shin splints, plantar fasciitis, or runner’s knee. Overpronators often benefit from stability or motion-control shoes designed to provide added support and help correct excessive inward rolling.

Underpronation (Supination)
With underpronation, the foot doesn’t roll inward enough. Instead, the outer edge of the foot absorbs most of the impact, which can increase the risk of ankle injuries, stress fractures, and joint pain. Runners who supinate typically need cushioned shoes with plenty of flexibility to help improve shock absorption and encourage a more balanced stride.

Understanding your pronation type is key to choosing the right shoes, improving your running form, and preventing injuries. Whether you’re a casual jogger or training for a marathon, paying attention to how your foot moves can keep you running stronger and longer.
