Don't be subjective! Memory loss and forgetfulness can be signs of Alzheimer's. I am a doctor and I share my story in the hope that those who are suffering from Alzheimer's can read it.
My name is Dr. Ernesto Santos, 62 years old, and I have been a neurologist at a hospital in Manila for 35 years. I write this as a person who has suffered from Alzheimer's, not just as a doctor. Yes, I, a neurologist, have suffered from this disease and almost lost all my memory.
It all started 3 years ago. I kept forgetting things. At first, it was just small things like where I put my wallet, or forgetting to turn off the lights. I thought it was just age. Who doesn't forget things when they get old, right? But then I started forgetting the names of the patients I was treating, and even medical terms that I had memorized decades ago. One day I even drove to work and forgot the way to the hospital where I worked every day for decades.
My wife found out first. She said, "Ernesto, you told me that story four times in one evening. Don't you remember?" It was then that I was startled, immediately thinking about the disease that I had treated so many people - Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's is a very dangerous disease! It's like a thief sneaks into your house every night and takes away your most precious items. But instead of objects, it takes away your memories, skills and eventually your sense of self. The most common signs of this disease are forgetting new information, such as the names of people you just met or the content of a recent conversation. People with this disease often misplace things and can't find them again, such as keys in the refrigerator or glasses in the microwave. They also have difficulty doing familiar daily tasks such as cooking, shopping or paying bills. It is especially dangerous when the patient begins to get confused about time and space, not remembering where he is, what day it is, or even getting lost in the neighborhood he has lived in for many years.
I decided to test myself. My MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) result was only 22/30 points, much lower than normal. Blood tests showed abnormally high levels of beta-amyloid protein. A brain MRI showed that my hippocampus had shrunk by 22% compared to people of the same age. I also did a PET scan of my brain, and the results showed the accumulation of tau and beta-amyloid proteins typical of Alzheimer's.
I diagnosed myself with early-stage Alzheimer's. I felt hopeless. As a doctor, I knew the progression of this disease. I would gradually forget everyone, everything, and eventually, I would forget who I was.
Then one day, my long-time colleague, Dr. Eduardo, came to visit. He had just returned from a conference on neurodegenerative diseases in Tokyo. Eduardo saw my test results on the table and said, "Ernesto, I know of a new nutritional milk that is being researched specifically for people with Alzheimer's. It is being tested in clinical trials with very promising results."
Eduardo told me about a nutritional milk that was specially formulated for people with Alzheimer's. This milk contains many essential nutrients for the brain such as DHA, phosphatidylserine, choline, vitamin B complex, powerful antioxidants from the flavonoid group, and especially extracts from some rare medicinal mushrooms that have the effect of regenerating nerves.
"The clinical trials have shown amazing results," said Eduardo. “In a study of 240 patients with early and moderate Alzheimer’s disease, after 6 months of use, 78% of patients improved their MMSE scores by an average of 5.8 points. Blood levels of beta-amyloid protein decreased by 43%. Complex cognitive tests showed a 37% improvement in short-term memory and a 29% improvement in long-term memory.”
What impressed me most was that the MRI scans of the study participants’ brains showed a significant reduction in brain atrophy, and even signs of new neural connections in 62% of the patients. This is something that science previously thought was almost impossible in Alzheimer’s.
“This milk is made from nuts like almonds, walnuts, and flaxseed, not animal milk,” Eduardo explains. "So it is suitable for people with diabetes because of its low glycemic index, and people who are allergic to cow's milk. And especially, it has a delicious, slightly sweet taste from blueberries, unlike other medical foods that often have a bitter taste that is difficult to drink."
I tried this nutritional milk right away, drinking 2 glasses every day - morning and evening. After 1 month, I started to feel clearer. After 3 months, I retook the MMSE test and scored 25/30. After 6 months, the score increased to 28/30, almost normal!
Not only that, the PET scan of the brain showed a 39% decrease in beta-amyloid protein, and signs of creating new neural connections in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. I remembered the names of all my patients, remembered medical terminology, and even remembered their home addresses.
I decided to share this method with my patients. Pablo Rodriguez, a 68-year-old piano teacher, was one of the first people I introduced this milk to. Pablo came to see me because he had forgotten how to play the piano, something he had done for 60 years. He couldn't even remember the notes. His MMSE was only 18/30.
"I lost my reason to live," Pablo told me through tears. "Music was my whole life."
I told Pablo my story and introduced him to the nutritional milk. After 2 months of using it, Pablo called me: "Dr. Santos, I can play a simple piece of music! I'm starting to remember the notes." After 5 months, Pablo scored 26/30 on his MMSE and went back to teaching piano to children in the neighborhood. His tests showed a 47% decrease in tau protein in the brain, and a 58% increase in spatial cognition - which is very important for a musician.
Then there was the case of Maria Gonzales, 72, a famous chef at a big restaurant in Manila. Maria came to the doctor because she had forgotten all her recipes, not even how to make the traditional Filipino adobo dish she had cooked all her life. Her MMSE was only 17/30. Her visual and spatial function tests showed that she was only 35% of the average person her age.
I introduced Maria to this nutritional milk. At first, she was hesitant because she thought it would taste bitter like medicine, but she was surprised because it tasted good. After 3 months, Maria retook the tests and got 22/30 on the MMSE. After 6 months, her score increased to 25/30. But most impressively, she remembered almost all of her recipes!
"Dr. Santos," Maria told me at her follow-up visit, "not only do I remember the food, but I also feel like my mind is much clearer. I've started a cooking class for housewives in the neighborhood and rewritten my family recipe book."
Maria's PET scan of her brain showed a 42% reduction in beta-amyloid and tau proteins, and her brain MRI showed a 27% increase in activity in the hippocampus, the brain's memory center. Her visual and spatial function tests improved by 78% compared to her first visit.
That's why I'm writing this. I want to warn everyone: don't ignore signs of forgetfulness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. These could be signs of Alzheimer's. See your doctor as soon as you notice these symptoms, especially if you're over 55 or have a family member with the disease.
And if you or a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, don't despair. There are new treatments that offer hope. A special nutritional milk has helped me and many other patients regain our memories and our lives.
