Goiter Agapan, โWag Pabayaan!
The National Nutrition Council is one with the nation in promoting the prevention, early detection, and management of goiter and iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) in the country during the Goiter Awareness Week (GAW). This campaign is pursuant with Presidential Proclamation No. 1188 or the annual observance of GAW which aims to advocate for thyroid health.
Goiter, characterized by an enlargement of the thyroid gland located at the base of the neck, affects 1 in 10 Filipino adults. It is most commonly caused by iodine deficiency, which stems from a lack of the mineral Iodine in the diet.
Through sufficient iodine in the diet, the prevention of goiter and IDDs are easily within the reach of all Filipino households.
The NNC offers these simple tips:
โ
Perform routine self-examinations of the neck, looking up and thoroughly checking for lumps; or checking for bulges in the thyroid area while drinking water.
โ
Use a moderate amount of iodized salt in preparing food.
โ
Consume iodine-rich food such as lato, tuna, tilapia, mackerel, dairy products, and eggs.
โ
Seek professional care from healthcare centers or hospitals in the presence of symptoms
