OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

Sa pagpapatuloy ng pagbahagi ng kaalaman tungkol sa breast cancer, alamin ang pagsasagawa ng mammogram. Ito ay isang pamamaraan ng breast cancer screening upang makatulong sa maagang detection o pagtukoy sa breast cancer kahit wala pa itong sintomas. Mas maaga ang diagnosis, mas mababa ang stage, mas mataas ang chance ng paggaling o cure!

Kumonsulta sa inyong doktor para alamin kung ang mammogram ay maari nang gawin sa inyo.

Oktubre ay Buwan ng Kamalayan Tungkol sa Kanser sa Suso.

Alam mo ba kung paano magsagawa ng self-breast exam (sariling pagsusuri ng suso)?

Hakbang 1:
- Tumayo sa harap ng salamin nang walang suot na bra o t-shirt
- Suriin kung may dimpling (paglubog ng balat), puckering (pagkakunot), o bulging (pamamaga) ng balat
- Tingnan kung may pagbabago sa utong
- Suriin kung may pamumula, pantal, pamamaga, o paglabas ng likido
- Ulitin ang mga hakbang na ito habang nakataas ang mga braso

Hakbang 2 o 3:
- Gawin ito habang nakahiga o habang naliligo
- Gamitin ang kanang kamay upang suriin ang kaliwang suso, at ang kaliwang kamay upang suriin ang kanang suso
- Galawin ang mga daliri nang paikot mula sa utong papalabas o maaaring gawin ito nang patayo (pataas-baba) sa bawat bahagi ng suso

Kung mapansin mo ang anumang pagbabago o kakaiba, kumonsulta agad sa iyong mapagkakatiwalaang general surgeon

Paalala: Gawin ito isang beses sa isang buwan, 2–3 araw pagkatapos ng regla para sa mas tumpak na pagsusuri

Do you know how to do a self breast exam?

Step 1:
- Stand in front of a mirror without a bra or t - shirt on
- Check for dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin
- Check for ni**le changes
- Rashes, redness or swelling and discharge
- Repeat the above steps with arms raised

Step 2 or 3:
- Evaluate lying down or in the shower
- Use your right hand to check your left breast and your left hand to check your right breast
- Move in a circle starting from the ni**le going out
- OR move vertically in rows

If you note any changes or irregularities consult with your friendly general surgeon.

Note: should be done once a month, ideally 2 - 3 days after menstruation

🚨 Think before you drink antibiotics. 💊

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜: 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞

I remember a 31-year-old patient who frequently bought antibiotics ‘Sa kapitbahay’, taking them for every minor illness, fevers, the occasional runny nose, illnesses that did not require antibiotics. No prescription, no proper dosing, just whatever was available. He felt fine, until one day, he wasn’t.

Pneumonia, which would have been treated with first-line antibiotics turned deadly. The usual antibiotics didn’t work. Even the strongest last-resort drugs failed. He succumbed to a drug-resistant bacterial infection that, years ago, would have been easily treatable.

The worst part? His younger sibling contracted it too, and was treated in the hospital for 16 days in the Intensive care unit.

This isn’t a rare case. Antibiotic resistance is growing, and it’s killing people.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?

• Rampant overuse and misuse of antibiotics, self-medication, incomplete courses, unnecessary prescriptions.
• Unregulated sales in pharmacies and even online.
• Antibiotics in livestock and agriculture, accelerating resistance.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

• Drug-resistant infections already kill 1.2 million people per year, more than HIV/AIDS or malaria.
• Simple infections like pneumonia or UTIs are becoming harder to treat.
• We are running out of effective antibiotics.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐞?

• Stop using antibiotics without a prescription. They don’t work for colds, flu, or viral infections.
• Stronger regulations on antibiotic sales, no more over-the-counter access.
• Better hygiene and infection control to slow the spread of resistant bacteria.
• Investment in new antibiotics and alternative treatments.

This isn’t a future threat. It’s already here. If we don’t act, we’re heading toward a world where a minor cut, a simple cough, or a routine surgery could be a death sentence.

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine estimates that CT scans performed in 2023 could contribute to more than 103,000 future cancer cases in the U.S.—accounting for about 5% of all annual cancer diagnoses.

Key Findings:

Over 93 million CT scans were conducted last year

Abdominal and pelvic scans posed the highest cancer risk

Children and older adults are especially vulnerable

While CT scans remain a vital diagnostic tool, researchers urge more cautious and judicious use, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making by both physicians and patients. In many cases, safer imaging alternatives may be available.
