HOW TO REDUCE DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

Digital eye strain symptoms include dry eyes, blurry vision tearing or watery eyes, and headache. To reduce eye strain, look away from your screen every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes when they feel dry. Sit about 25 inches or at arm’s length from your screen and adjust its height so you’re looking slightly downward at it. Adjust the brightness and contrast of your screen and dim the lighting near your screen. If you wear contacts, wear eyeglasses instead.

Consult a pediatric ophthalmologist for more information.

HYPEROPIA: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Common signs and symptoms of hyperopia include general eye discomfort or a headache after doing close tasks such as reading, writing, computer work or drawing; eyestrain, including burning eyes, and aching in or around the eyes; and squinting. Most children are farsighted but do not experience symptoms of blurry vision because their eyes are able to bend (refract) the light rays to place them directly on the retina.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on hyperopia.

WHAT IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye. With the blockage cutting off blood supply, your eye attempts to grow new blood vessels which do not develop properly and can leak easily. The damaged blood vessels and abnormal new ones can cause vision loss.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Maintain good blood sugar and blood pressure control. Take your diabetes medications as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the diet recommended by your doctor or nutritionist. Sometimes, having good sugar control can restore some of your vision. Good blood pressure control keeps the blood vessels in your eyes healthy. Have a comprehensive eye exam every year or as recommended by your doctor.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.
