Self-harm remains one of the most misunderstood mental health concerns, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Research consistently shows that a significant number of students report engaging in self-harm behaviors โ often in silence.
Self-harm is not simply โattention-seeking,โ nor is it a personality flaw. From a psychological perspective, it is most often understood as a maladaptive coping mechanism โ a way to regulate overwhelming affect, manage distress, or externalize internal pain when healthier strategies feel inaccessible.
However, while it may provide temporary relief, self-harm is associated with increased psychological risk and is one of the strongest predictors of future su***de attempts. This makes awareness, early intervention, and supportive response crucial.
As a community, our role is not to judge, but to understand.
Not to shame, but to create psychologically safe spaces.
Not to dismiss, but to respond with empathy and evidence-based guidance.
If someone discloses their struggle, listen actively. Validate their emotional experience. Encourage professional support when appropriate. Small responses can have significant protective effects.
