🦠 What Causes Rabies?

Rabies is caused by the rabies virus, which attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal — but it is 100% preventable with timely treatment.

🐾 How Rabies Is Transmitted
1️⃣ Animal Bites (Most Common)
Spread through the saliva of an infected animal
Even a small bite can transmit the virus
High-risk animals include:
-Dogs (most common worldwide)
-Bats
- Cats
2️⃣ Scratches
If claws are contaminated with saliva, scratches can transmit rabies.
3️⃣ Saliva Contact
When infected saliva touches:
-Open wounds
-Eyes
-Nose
-Mouth

🧠 How the Virus Affects the Body
1. Virus enters through a bite or wound
2. Travels through nerves (not blood) toward the brain
3. Infects the brain and spinal cord
4. Causes inflammation, leading to severe neurological symptoms
This process can take weeks to months — which is why immediate treatment after exposure is critical.

💉 Prevention & What To Do After a Bite
If You’re Bitten:
1. Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for 15 minutes.
2. Apply antiseptic (iodine or alcohol).
3. Seek medical care immediately.

Health Professionals may give:
Rabies vaccine
Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG)
This is called Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) — and it is highly effective when given promptly.
